We won't have to hold a director'i meeting. ' Oiover Suttles, general YMCA secretary, said that in his 3T years of "Y" work he had never n a team he could be ai proud of a this 1949 squad. He also pointed out that one point ol justifiable prida was the fact that the squad was made up entirely of Canton boys. Four players who were on the first Champion team that ever played in a state tournament figured prominently in bringing the first state crown to Canton. They are Deweese, Pitcher-First Baseman Windy Sams. Walt Spenee. and Shortstop Steve Scar borough. I.ee McElrath, head of Cham pion Paper's personnel division, introduced the speakers as toast-master l.ouis Gates, Champion YMCA president, told the audience that the team had reflected great credit on Champion and the town of Can Ion, in establishing a fine reputa tion in both playing ability and sportsmanship. Edwin Ilaynes said Canton had furnished outstanding teams for ten years or more. "We salute you lonight," he s-dd. "as outstanding athletes and -date champions." Spenee declared he enjoyed the past season of Softball better than my other he has played with Champion, and full Jamison, in an address sparkling with kindly wit. complimented the players on hav ing clone a fine job. II. A. Heidi r the Ch amnion company's Canton division super intendent, told (he audience that "we are happy to have this group represent Canton on soft ball teams, and hope to see many more fine teams in the years to come." Michael had ptais-e for bolh players and Canton's fans for then demonstration of fine sportsman ship all through the season. "The visiting teams this year," he added, "said they never played before a better hunch of fans." The event drew the curtain on the most successful season in Hay wood County's colorful sports hi.s- tory, Bosidet the fact that lh 1949 Champion tm made Canton the onpital of North Carolina Softball and a stronghold of the sport in the South, four players are on the year's books as members of the All-State squad.
