We have prophets in our modern day men who try to warn us of disasters, or, fortu nately for us, try to show us how even the inventions that can bring; horror and death, can, if prop erly used, also bring; peace and benefits to all mankind namely, atomic research. World War I was foreseen by many men of world vision but people generally considered the world was then "too civilized" to risk such a calamity. The proph ets were correct. Many predicted World War II, and uttered warnings. The por tents were largely ignored, al though they did bring fear and dread also incredulity that such a thing could happen twice in one generation. The sixth chapter of Isaiah, the greatest Hebrew prophet, as signed for today's lesson, begins: "In the year that King Uzziah pf Judah ) died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up,' and His train filled the temple." Uzziah had reigned for 52 years, MEMORY "Here am I; send and his reign had been a happy and prosperous one. Now the throne was vacant, and forebod ings of trouble were rife. Uzziah died in 734 B. C, and in the succeeding years, when Isaiah was prophesying, Rome was founded. It was a time for people to repent of their Sinful way of liv ing, to turn to righteousness and to correct the abuses in the gov ernment of their land. It has been said of this chap ter in Isaiah, that it "stands un rivaled in the Old Testament, both for grandeur of conception and the majestic simplicity of its style.'1 The reader will be reminded forcibly of St. John's Revelation, and should re-read the latter. (Above it (the thfone) stood the seraphim. ech one was cov ered with six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. "Then said I, woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of un clean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts." "Then flew one of the seraph im unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tong3 from the altar: "And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged." "In the earthly sanctuary the burning of incense was per formed by taking coals from the altar of burnt offering and pour ing them on the altar of incense, and then upon these was scat tered the incense." There was nc burnt offering on this altar. "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." Uplifted by the thought that his sins were forgiven and he was worthy to do the Lord's will, VERSE mc." Isaiah 6:3. Isaiah offered himself as the mes senger of the Lord. He did not ask what the mission was. He was willing to do anything that God wanted him to do. As a matter of fact, it was a disheartening task that the Mas ter Set for His servant. He was to fell his people of the troubles descending upon their country. The kingdom was doomed to dev astation and annihilation by the then imperial power of that world. He wa3 to warn them of all this, but they would not hear him or understand, for their "earj would hear but understand not, and see ye, Indeed, but perceive not." To the children in the class Isa iah's response to the Lord's ques tion may be made "a suggestion for their own everyday living.
