Farm Bureau Launches
Drive For Hew Members
The Brannan farm bill will be
fought to the bitter end. Jack
Lynn, representative of the Amer
ican Farm Bureau Federation, told
Haywood audiences here this week.
Mr. Lynn was the principal
speaker at a series of meetings
w hich launched a membership cam
paign for the Haywood unit of the
Farm Bureau.
Charles B. MeCrary, president of
the Haywood unit, said that a mini
mum of COO members was the goal,
but "1,000 would be better."
Mr. Lynn said, "The farm peo
ple are the last group to keep
America from going socialist," as
lie solicited their cooperation for
helping the Bureau "wage a fight
against excessive government
spending."
"We should be happy that wo
are not getting all the government
we are paying for," he explained,
as he pointed out the large num
bers on government payrolls.
i Mr. Lynn also hit at the contin
ued deficit of the government,
pointing out that "this practice
cannot continue. We must start
I going in the black some time, in-
! stead of the red."
In discusing the lirannan plan.
i he compared it to the plan used
in Germany in 1934 "and it just
won't work it is not practical."
The object of the plan, Mr. Lynn
said, was to keep food costs down.
1 and farm prices up, with controlled
farm profiits. The bill is apparently
dead for this term, he said, but is
sure to come up next year.
Mr. Lynn said that the Farm
liureau in North Carolina had
placed too much emphasis on to
bacco, when more attention should
; be given to boys and girls. Then
1 he cited instances of where the
Bureau had played a part in aid
ing the youth of the country.
A prize is being offered by the
bureau to the community getting
the largest number of members.
