Film Apeman
Feels He Belongs
In A Zoo
HOLLYWOOD l'P An actor
who makes movies with an ape.
Johnny Weissmuller says, feels like
he s i he one w ho ought to be in a
700.
Apes are so imicli better actors
than people that they make a man
teel like lies the lower rung in
evolution. If men and apes had
started o.'f in movies from an even
start. Weissmuller believes, the
men would still be climbing trees
while the apes spouted Hamlet.
' 'Stealing a scene from an ape."'
sa s Weissmuller, "is like trying to
tie our shoelaces with your hands
ei.cjised m boxing gloves."
And Weissmuller knows. He's
now making Mark of the Gorilla''
at Columbia, but he spent years
teaming with Cheetah, the ape. ir.
the Taran movie series.
"An ape can do anything In ino
it hi' stated "He can bare his
teeth, or squeal hysterically, or
scratch his chest, or eat a ripe
banana or bicycle on a tight rope,
or ape another actor And he's got
the audience's eyes on him as if
lu- h.id hypnotized them.
Couldn't Compete
"I could have painted my hair
green, or ;:sted a third ear on my
head Nobody would even have no
ticed." The onh wa for an actor to'
keep ccii with an ape. Weisniuller
vaid. is to set some mighty sharp
dialogue.
"Thai's where I didn't have a
chance." lie mourned. "In the Tar
z.iii pictures. 1 didn't have much
i:!oiy t,, say than the ape. Fasci
nating repartee like 'Me Tarzan.
iu .lane doesn't exactly keep the
audience riveted to attention."
Weissmuller adds that he's not
oic about the vears he spent play
ing Taran. or about the fat pay
checks he collected for same. He
was grateful for the job.
"Hut I'm much happier." he add
ed, "pi.i.ving opposite people now
than 1 was playing vtoogc to an ape
fir so marv vears."
lie's nut !ooge for an ape in
this picture. He's stooge for a crow.
The bird smokes a ( igar. and we'll
bet nobody looks at Weissmuller
that's going on. either.
More than three-fourths of
