It's an old custom datum bark to 1872 when members of the onmnal "Ancient and Honourable Anvil Battery" gathered to lire the first 21-bang anvil chorus in honor ol the Queen. They really used anvils. New Westminster did not have gun then. It's an old Chesshire custom - that of filling the square hole in the top of the anvil with gunpow der, placing another one on top. and setting the charge off with a red-hot iron. The resulting ' bang was loud enough to fool anyone. The novel gun is fired at one min ute intervals, 21 times. A radio antenna is ehe -ified a directional when if one direction heller I ban aimiher. Long before this time, when great grandmother was young, the girls of the family were taught to spin yarn and weave cloth, and many of the simple gar ments of those days were the products of their delicate hands. The spinning wheel and hand loom have gone the way of the wooden plow, the ox cart, and the grandfather's clock. They exist today mainly as relics of a colorful past. New inventions and new methods are constantly replac ing old ones. Human life sweeps on in a world of change. The only abiding things are the things of the mind and spirit; faith, hope, and love are the great eternals. Man needs a spiritual anchorage in a changing world. And the Church points him to God, who is the same yester day, today, and forever. He is man's rock and refuge in every age.
