II If Drive Started To Expand Journalism Dept.OfUNC The chartering of a new corpora tion last week opened a movement to expand the University of North Carolina's journalism department into a School of Journalism. The new non-profit corporation. chartered by North Carolina Secretary-of State, Thad Eure, is the Journalism Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. The Foundation of 110 charter members. Including W. C. Kuss. editor of the Mountaineer, immedi ately launched a campaign to raise $100,000 for an endowment to expand the journalism depart ment Into the proposed new school. Within a short time after the drive started, the first donors gave $1,000 each and the will of the late W. Carey Dowd, Jr., former Char lotte News published set aside more than $5,000 for the foundation. The new organization was initiat ed by the North Carolina Press As sociation. Its charter members are emi nent Dubllshers, radio executives. writers, and public officials both in and out of the state. The names Include those of Sen ators Frank P. Graham and Clyde R. Hoey, Secretary of the Army Gordon Gray, who is publisher of the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel; and Washington Columnist Drew Pearson, among others.
