Christmas is near at hand, we do not have to remind you, so to day's lesson tells the story of the priest, Zacharias, and his wife Elisabeth, and of the enuncia tion to Mary. St. Luke tells the story: There lived a very fine couple "both righteous before God" who were childless. Zacharias, the hus band, was a priest in the temple. One day as he executed hi3 office, there appeared to him an angel of the Lord who told him not to fear, for his prayer was heard and his wife, Elisabeth, would bear a child, and they were to name him John. "And thou shalt have joy and gladness: and many shall rejoice at his birth," the angel said. He was "to make ready a people pre pared for the Lord." The sixth month thereafter the angel went to Nazareth and sought out a girl named Mary and told her she was to be blessed 'Blessed art thou among wom en " he said, but she was troubled at his speech. BA That all-important letter to Santa; in it we told him the many things we wanted. We were children then ... Now, as adults, we have discovered a new approach to Santa. Wherever possible, we drop little hints about the things we need, in the hope that we'll receive useful gifts. The first Christmas came while the world was still very young. The people of Bethlehem were looking for the kind of king who would live in a palace. That was the sort of Messiah they wanted. But God gave them a Child in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger ... a babe destined to become a spiritual King . the kind of Messiah the world needed. The mark of spiritual maturity is the realization that sacred needs are more important than secular wants. This is the Christ mas season. Come to your Church and receive GOD'S GIFT.
