Bclk, Pastor MAGGIE CUURClt Sunday School at 10 a.m. Mrs. C. L. White, Supt. ' Preaching at V a.m. by the pas tor. His subject, "Profit and Loss", SHADY GROVE CHURCH Sunday School at 10 a.m. Glen Boyd Supt. j Preaching at 7:30 p.m. by the pastor. His subject "The Prayer That Prevailed". A well-rounded prayer has three elements in it, Communion, Peti tion and Intercession. Communion is prayer with your face toward God and God alone. David said, "Come, and let us kneel before the Lord", A praying man is not always beseeching God; he spends time in adoring God, lov ing God and praising God. Petition is prayer with our face toward self in the more limited sense. Petition has its place in our prayers, but it does not have first place. Intercession's prayer with our face toward others and is, objec tive rather than subjective in its effects. Intercession is the highest form of service, and also the hard est form of service. The greatest outlet of power is through interces sory prayer. t'l I J GAINS 10 POUNDS Mill Mill Janie Mao Lynch, 134 Hunter Ave-., Knoxville, Tnn., writes (and her Utter U signed by her mother)! Jehovah Calls Amos to Prophesy HERDSMAN LEAVES FLOCKS TO WARN ISRAEL Scripture . ; t . By NEWMAN CAMPBELL ! YEARS of prosperity In a coun try are not always times of high moral standards, sad to say, In fact, when people have plenty of money they are often inclined to pay more attention to worldly matters taking trips to far places, buying luxuries, etc than to think of God and what He wishes us to do. In Amos' time the Northern Kingdom was prosperous. The prosperity did not work for Is rael's spiritual good, however. The oldt'r system of small proprietors had gone. Large estates worked by serf or slave labor, prevailed, and the rpflult was bad. The needs of the mass of the people were disre garded, and immorality and judi cial corruption were prevalent. The people had forgotten Jeho vah who had led them from cap tivity into the Promised Laod. To Amos, a man who was a herdsman and tender of sycomore trees, who was close to nature, but also a nomad a traveler to other lands, acquainted with many Amos ' dren can understand, is to live ; according to our best knowledge. Children are not happy and con tented when they know they have done something wrong when they are disagreeable, cruel to their playmates at cross pur poses with parents, brothers and sisters, and others. They too can turn to God, the Father, and ask Him to help them to be what He would wish, and thus be joyful again, just as can their elders. - Now, Amaziah, priest Of Beth el, sent a message to Jeroboam, the king, to tell him that Amos had conspired against him (which was a lie) "in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear his words, for thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own lend." Apparently, King Jeroboam paid no attention to Amaziah's message (possibly he' liked this prophet of disaster), so Amaziah spoke to Amos himself and nt too gently: "O, thou seer, go, flee thee away unto the land of Judah, MEMORY VERSE 'Seek Jalovafc, and ye shall live." Amos 5:6. peoples, the situation was ripe for ! disaster. Clearly Amos heard the voice of Jehovah calling him away from his flocks and trees, from his sol itary life of meditation, to go to Bethel and warn his people of their danger. This was about the year 760 B. C. Amos had no social reforms to offer. His job, as he saw it, was to call men back to the faith of their fathers. Men could find their only safety In moral and spiritual reforms. God was essentially law, he de clared: "For, lo, He that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought; that maketh the morning darkness, and tread eth upon the high places of the earth. Jehovah, the God of Hosts, is His name." Again: "For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel, Seek ye Me, and ye shall live." "Seek good and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, ihe God of Hosts, shall be with you, as yc have spoken. : To live happily, even little enn and there eat bread, and proph esy: But prophesy not again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's Chanel, and it is the king's court." Then answered Amos, ana saia to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; "but I was an herdsman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto My people Israel." Amos told how God showed him a basket of summer fruit "And He said, Amos, what seest thou: And I said, A basket of summer fruit- Then said the Lord unto me, the end is come upon My people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more. "And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast thera forth With silence." . With this sad prophecy we close this lesson. Our next two lessons, however, will be on this same book of Amos, and his words to his people.
