This will be one of some 200 ganteg which will mark the open' ing !of the 1950 American Legion Junior season in North Carolina. Approximately 100 teams of youngsters up to "slightly more thai" 17 years old are competing in etary section of the state" foday in bids to open their campaigns on a successful note. Al the same time, today's action in a ense closes a four-month cam paign by Legion officials of ' Wavnesville, Hazel wood, and Can ton j to organize a Legion Junior team of Haywood County boys. The" drive started last February whei representatives of the three posts .drew up plans to canvass the county's schools for talent and to raise a minimum $1,500 to pay the team's expenses in its first season. Later, Jack Justice wa9 elected coach'vand Bill Milner, Chicago Bear football star from Hazelwood, was elected manager of the Hay wodd' elub. Wneh Justice called the first practice in April, more than 100 boys from every section of the county resoonded. Within the last two weeks, he completed the painful job of cut ting the squad to the maximum 20 boys ,the Legion rule's permit a team to carry in the opening round playoffs, ' All last week, with the schools closed for the summer vacation, Justice and Milner sent their boys through drills to polish their per formances for today's opener. Just what kind of a club Hay wood County has in the stiff Le gion Competition this season will be known by the end of this week. The announcement was made last weekend by Monroe High School authorities. He succeeds Jim Gudger, an other former WCTC ace, who was appointed assistant football and head basketball coach at his alma mater. Jaynes assisted Gudger, in coach' ing Monroe's Pythons to an un defeated regular season. One of Monroe's victories was a 13-0 Paper Bowl victory over Waynesville's Mountaineers. ' Jaynes, coached Monroe's for ward wall and spent his spare time on Sundays playing in the line for the professional Charlotte TJllp' pers. After graduating from Western Carolina, he taught briefly at Waynesville, then went tflMon roe in time to help open the school's highly successful 1949 grid season. ' Swanger at right. The Haywood boys will play their first home game Wednesday afternoon, clashing with Ruther ford County's squad at Canton The game time is set for 3 p.m. Coach Justice said he probably would start Southpaw Jimmy Kuy kendall for this one. The next day they'll travel to Shelby for a night contest against the former National Legion cham pions, then will have a day of rest. On Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., they'll meet Marion's Legion club at the Waynesville High School field as they wind up their first week of the season. Sylva Plowboys gave the Hazelwood nine a tumble in the WNC Industrial League standings Saturday afternoon when they de-. feated the locals in both ends of a twin-bill, 5-2, and 8-1.
