Azalea Flourishes
On Gregory's Bald
"One of the most beautiful stands
of azaleas north of Charleston!" j
claim some who have seen the!
flower display atop Gregory's Bald. 1
Just why this particular mountain.
5,000 feet above sea level, Is com
pletely bare of trees, yet nourishes
a magnif icient stand of azaleas Is
a fact as yet unexplained by
natulalistsJ One hundred and
thirty-seven varieties of azaleas,
ranging in hue from white to deep
crimson, have been classified on
Gregory's Bald. Some of the azalea
plants grow as high as eighteen
feet. '
Said one visitor, "It looks as
though a landscape artist came
here and went mad," Whatever the
explanation of the aealea display,
It is a unique one, perfectly comp
lemented by a 3(iQ,-degree panor
amic view of the Smoky Mountains
National Park, the National Forest,
and a patchwork of cultivated
areas. . V
From atop Black Camp Gap, one can see an endless row of towering mountain peaks, with deep
gorges and valleys below. This scene is one that attracts hundreds of people every year.
