From several quarters come signs that things are quieting down, color-wise, in the home. A fabric company calls it "a preference for tranquil colors." The chairman of the Julure de sign competition, in awarding the fabric design fust prize to a light, airy pattern said: "The eloign contest points up the current preference for well organized designs. The bold, splashy patterns of fabrics and wallpapers were left out of the prize selections. Soft browns, coming into prom inence in fashionable color schemes, seem to back up the sub dued color theories. Another soft, grayed shade plum is picked as a coming favorite by Madelyn Smilh. stylist for the Shulman Abrash fabric company. Trend Awaited It will take a few re-decorating seasons before this trend becomes apparent in the average home. The walls probably will be the first to show the change. A paper called "antique rose" is typical of the new trend in flow ered wallpaper, according to the United Wallpaper Co. A delicate pink rose is drawn against a back ground of miniature daisius. In the high fashion version, a charcoal-colored background is used. The tiny daisies in the background H an aimost geometric pattern. I Textured and three-dimensional monotone designs are another new i way o get a subdued wall back ground. The American artist Henry Billings designed four new three I dimensional patterns for the Schu- macher Co., including a chicken j wire design and a shadowed polka dot pattern. Fabrics Copied ! One group of textured papers in the United Wallpaper line has been ; adapted from hand-loomed fabrics designed by Dorothy Liebes, A Jarge plaid design, using red, i green and black against a white ; background, is an identical copy of the original nubby fabric, even ;to stray glints of gold copied from ! 'he occasional metallic thread in the hand-loomed fabric. This company has a two-tone ) version of a bamboo blind in its ! new group of third-dimensional : papers. Garrett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. against a grey background, or in light beige against a darker beige ground. Besides making a pleasant background for pictures or bright colored furniture, the third-dimensional patterns give a feeling of increased space in a small room. Decorators Help Today's housewife is supposed to know a lot more about interior decorating than grandmother did. The companies who make hoifle furnishings and fabrics are giving her more and more help. Wall papers are being grouped in sam ple books so that several co-ordi-; nating patterns and colors are to gether. The Schuiman Abrash company will provide stores with charts this fall, showing tiny color samples oft the 431 shades used in the' company's fabrics. They'll be grouped together in various basic color divisions. Decorating fabrics are put out in co-ordinated groups, so the LAFF-A-DAY i 1 V ; : wm if i Of. l35i K fmt, WW. bcVM hlL r,.7 , "But I did brush my teeth, feel them! They're still wet!"
