Campbell Taken
Into Waynesville
Lions Club
Fred Y. Campbell, civic leader,
American Legion official, and
sheriff-nominate. Is also a Lion
now.
He was inducted Thursday night
into the Waynesville service Organ
ization by Joe Davis, chairman of
the club's Lions education commit
tee. . .
The vacancy in the 65-member
roster was created when the Rev.
L. C. Elliott, pastor of the First
Baptist Church here, resigned
because he is moving to Roxboro
this month. He accepted the posi
tion of pastor of the First Baptist
Church there last month.
The new Lion served as the first
president of the Soco Gap Boost
ers Club, created inure than a year
ago to promote the development of
the Soco Valley, He's also been act
ive in the civic affairs of his home
town of Hazelwood.
A former commander of the
American Legion's Waynesville
post (officially, Haywood Post 47),
he was elected last spring to serve
as commander of the Legion's
Western North Carolina district.
The posts in the district have a
membership of approximately
3,000 veterans.
In the May 27 Democratic Pri
mary, he scored a lop-sided victory
in the three-man race for the nomi
nation for sheriff.

Cherokee Indian women have become so modern in appearance that they have to use make-up lo
make them look like Indians for roles in the drama, "Unto These Hills," at Cherokee. Mrs. Ethelyn
Saloli, a full-blooded Cherokee, makes up in a dressing room to play a romantic lead in the open-air
stage production which .portrays the tribulations and the triumphs of the Cherokee Nation. Her foiir-year-old
daughter, Mary Ella, doesn't seem favorably impressed with the process. (AP Photo).
