That was the headlines on The Dally Tar Heel of the Uni versity of North Carolina. The event was to be the second annual Old South Ball to be Riven by the combined chapters of Duke, Wake Forest, N. C. State and Carolina of the Kappa Alpha Order. These affairs have drawn a great deal of interest throughout the' south as, not only does North Carolina have a Ball, but Georgia, Florida, and other southern states. As a bit of a background let me first tell you a bit about the Kappa Alpha Order. It was founded at Washington and Lee College while Robert E. Lee was President. Be cause General Lee was what the founders considered a perfect Southern gentleman it was decided that Kappa Alpha was to remain substantially a southern fraternity. There are no laws which prevent K. A. from having chapters in the North, it has simply became a mat ter of poliey. Hence, front one of our favorite songs the boundaries are "From the Old North State to the Golden Gate. From New EXPERT WHEEL BALANCING Is a specialty with us! Something which makes the Old South Ball so unique is the faet thiit all the boys wear the uniform of the Confederacy. U was in these uniforms that the nier.iuers of the chapter stood on the steps of the administration building at lush noon Friday and proclaimed the South free from the rest of the na tion for the week-end. Friday night found several hund red couples gathered together at Sparrows Pool for a good old-fashioned picnic. Several boys, having a gay time, decided to go swim ming. But fortunately the pool was empty. This picnic was really the beginning to the big week-end. Everybody was up early Satur day morning, dressed In their Old Confederate uniforms walking a round Chapel Hill, "giving the citi zens a thrill." so they said. The Old South Ball being thoroughly adver tised In the little college town, we all piled in our cars and started for Raleigh which was to be the scene of the event. Before our arrive! in Raleigh, arrangements had been made with the city officials that the main street, Fayetteville, was to be block ed off for our pat tide which was to begin at 2:30 P. M. and continue until about four. This was to be the time we were really able to "show o(f" to the public in the Capital City. Each chapter had its own unit and many of the boys were trained as to the mysteries of drilling. The parade began with convert ibles carrying the girls in their "Scarlet O'llara" formats, follow ed by the "Boys in Grey" on foot. This was a very ureal success and many of the slate papers carried pictures of the affair. Saturday night brought the big dance lhat every ly A. had been looking forward to for' wecljs. White formal dresses swirling and long jacket tails flying, respective ly, the girls and boys danced to the smooth music of Sunny Dunham and his orchestra.
