John answered them: "I indeed baptize you with water: but One mightier than I Cometh, the latchet of w'houe shoes I am not worthy to unloose. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." John's prophesying was short, however. He had heard of Herod's theft of his brother's vife, and he rebuked him severely. Herod seems to have admired John, but he was a weak man, much under the influence of Herodnis, the wife he had stolen, so he pvit John in prison. Before he was imprisoned, how ever. John had the tremendous privilege of baptizing Jesus Christ. And when He was baptized and praying, "the heaven was opened, end the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heav en, which said, Thou art My be loved Son; in Thee I am well pleased." Now as he pined in a dark, damp, close prison, John pondered upon the things his friends told him about Jesus, and he sent two MEMORY VERSE "Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance" Luke 3:8. eapti:m f r ;.. They found Jesus curing many of infirmities and plagues, and evil spirits; and to some who wrre blind. He restored sight John's disciples- returned to him and told him what they had , seen and heard, rod John no longer doubted t'net Jesus was m truth the Christ.. , After they had gone, Jesus told the people that John was indeed a prophet "For I say unto you. Among those that are born of wo men there is not a greater pro phet than John the Baptist." Herodius, however, had her re venge on John for his interfer ence with her union with Herod., When her daughter, Salome, pleased Herod with her dancing, so that he promised her anything for which she asked, her mother told her to ask for John's head. Herod was grieved, but he felt he must keep his promise, so he or dered John beheaded. "And the disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus."- What a sad scene that must have been. The world was poorer for the bss of such a man as John the Baptist. Soon the Church bells will again tell us that it's Sunday morning. How are we to spend this day? A picnic or an outing might be fun, or maybe a visit to Aunt Mary's. Of course, we can turn over and go back to sleep, or may be we should complete that de layed chore. As individuals, we have these choices'to make and more. But as human beings whose destiny is guided by a greater power, we have no choice. Our blessings and our very lives have been bestowed and not earned. They have been entrusted to our care while on earth, and they are not ours to squander or to abuse. If you begin now to attend Church regularly and to support its work, you will want no other choice for you will be turning an obligation into a great joy. As men and women, it is our divine privilege to dedicate one day each week to the glory of our Benefactor. Listen to the Church bells ringing on Sunday morning! Listen closely, for this is a day of worship, of prayer and thanksgiving T,,. ffi CHURCH ; It kroner Church spiriluol valuQ3. Without neilhnr ,1 survive.
