defeated last Tuesday night by wal-loping-the
Canton girls, 41-31, at
the Fines Creek gym.

the Canton cagers, and the third
contest of the campaign for the
home squads.
Again, it was Forward Edith
Rathbone who set the scoring pace
for the unbeaten sextet. .
This time she connected for 27
points; tops for the contest.
Miss Messer led the losers with
15 points.'
In the boys' game, Center Ron
nie Hall of the Bears took individu
al scoring honors with 16 points,
while B. Kirkpatrick. a guard, was
hifih for the losers with 11.
The Canton boys showed signs
of owning another powerhouse
like the one that steamrollered
through last season to the cham
pionships of two major tourna
ments. They were playing without the
services of Jerry Alexander, high
scoring ace of last season.

The first of the series was played
at the Crabtree-lron Duff gym.
' In the return twin bill, staged at
the Hazelwood School, the Crab
tree sextet romped to a 48-21 vic
tory, while the Crabtree boys won
their contest over the Aliens Creek
quintet, 56-24.
Forwards Betty Jo Russell and
Ed Rogers, both of Crabtree, top
ped the winners in their respective
games both nights.
Miss Russell connected for 16
points In the first game, and boost
ed her total to 29 in the Monday
night contest.
Ed racked up 19 points in his
first outing, and 17 in his second.
His first action topped both teams
In individual scoring.
In thp second game, however.
Buchanan of Aliens Creek won in
dividual scoring honors with a 19
point performance.
Miss Russell's total in each game
was tops for individual players on
both sides. .

The Haywood County Library
will close at 'noon Saturday, De
cember 23, and will remain closed
through Monday and Tuesday of
next week for the Christmas holi

will not hold December meeting.

Section To Meet
The local Peoples' Section of the
United Nations will meet at 2:30
P. M, Thursday at the Waynesville
Presbyterian Church to discuss
America's role In the current UN
General Assembly.
The Section, sponsored by the
'Waynesville Woman's Club, will
consider the question: "What
Should The United States try to ac
complish at this Assembly?"
The session will precede the reg
ular meeting of the Woman's Club.

Much Interest In
Annual Concert
Much interest is being shown in
the annual Christmas concert by
the 55-piece high school band and
90-volce chorus at high school on
Tuesday night.
The program will feature Christ
mas numbers, with several com
bined selections by the 145 musi-

Post Wednesday night.
The Session will open at 7:30
p.m. in the commissioners' room of
the Haywood County Court House.
Albert Marshall, commander of
the local post, will preside.
Mr. Brown arrived here yester
day to help local leaders plan
methods for boosting membership
in the organization in tins' area.
Mr. Marshall said there are 35
active members In the local post
now,- but that there are between
300 and 400 former members who
have allowed their active status to
lapse.
The session Is aimed at reviving
interest on the part of non-members
in general and former mem
bers in particular, in the local organization
Charles Islcy.
Prior to the concert at eight, a
group will sing carols under the
outdoor lighted Christmas tree at
the school.

Mr. Sebe Bryson of Waynesville
was honored Friday afternoon on
the occasion of tiis 28th birthday.
The occasion was a surprise par
ty held at the office of County Tax
Collector, which Mr. Bryson is, and
it was a "dutch treat" affair.
This wasn't the surprise part of
the party. - .
Among those who attended were
Mrs. J. P. Dlcus, Miss Evelyn Sli
er, Mrs. Boyd Medford, and a re
porter, who crashed.
The reporter didn't get any ice
cream.
St. John's School
To Present
Christmas Operetta
An operetta, "It's Christmas In
The Circus," will be presented by
the students of St. John's Graded
School, In the school auditorium
Wednesday night at 8 o'clock.
The cast will include Rex Felch
ter as the Ringmaster, Charlene
Duckett as Toto, The Clown, Bobby
Lancaster as Tony, and' Davis
Henry as Santa Claus.
Kindergarten children will be
hears and ponies and choruses from
the first and second grades will rep
resent popcorn balls and candies.
Third, fourth, and fifth grade stu
dents will compose the band, while
the sixth, seventh, and eight grades
will furnish the trapeze girls and
the Yo-Yo girls.
A Christmas tableau will follow
the operetta with Joe Liner as
Joseph, Sophie Cverengna as Mary,
and Charlene Duckett as the Angel.
The program is beigg directed
by the grade teachers of St. John's.

During later years, Mr. Blackwell
"is -a traveling salesman for the
Waynesville Wholesale Company
until 111 health forced hU retire
ment in 1944.
He was a loyal and devoted mem
ber of the First Methodist Church,
which he served as a steward and
an usher for many years. Hundreds
of members and visitors to the
church will remember his cordial
greeting and warm handclasp on
Sunday morning.
Mr. Blackwell's business took
him to all sections of Haywood and
adjoining counties where he made
countless friends. He was fcnown
for his kindnesses to the people he
passed along the way and for his
love of little children.
He was born April 23, 1866 in
Ruffin, N. C, the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Lafayette
Blackwell and' during his early
manhood was engaged in farming
and the mercantile business in Cas
well County. He was a Mason and a
member of the United Commercial
Travelers.
His first marriage was to Miss
Susan Bird Anderson of Almanac
County, who died in 1901, In 1903
he was married to Miss Amanda
Clark, who survives.
Other survlvers Include three
daughters, Mrs. Jeff Garrett of
Reldsville, Mrs. Harry . Frehn of
Bristol Tennessee, and Mrs. James
Michaels of Durham; one son, Paul
Blackwell of Waynesville; a broth
er. Wallace Blackwell of Waynes
ville; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. A second son,
Hunter Blackwell, Jr., lost his life
in a plane crash while serving with
the Air Corps in 1944.
Arrangements were under the di
rection of Garrett Funeral Home
Carnival aided the drive.
