Defense Unit
Clvde lust weekend became the
first town west of Asheville to or
ganize for civilian defense as re
quested by the N. C. Council of
Civil Defense in Maleigh since the
western section of the state was
designed as an evacuation area for
sections of the surrounding slates.
The meeting was called and eon-
ducted by Chief of Police C. K
Lanning, who was previously ap
pointed director.
Mr. Lanning stated that some of
the chief aims and purposes for an
organized civilian defense program
were as follows:

spect to the necessity of a civilian
defense program; to organize and
