In discussing the 1951 Agricul-:' lural Conservution Program, Mr..1 Ferguson pointed out that needs for the future may be just as great j as for this j ear. Although every; farmer should do all he can to pro-j duce the crops needed now, these increases should be inade only' where they will not impair future' production. j The formula for the 1951 pro-j gram, as stated by the P. MA chair man is: "Keep up the fertility of the land. Conserve all possible moisture. I se grass and legumes to restore and maintain the organic matter in the soil." 'Kfie Program is icafly to assist farmers in provid ing for seeding grasses and le gumes. Where lime or phosphate is needed, it pro ides for sharing the cost. Plant Bed Covers Do Not Carry Mold Sonic North Carolina tobacco growers are destroying old sup plies of plant bod covers in the mistaken belief that blue mold will carry over from one season to the next in such covers. Plant disease specialists at N' C. State College say, however, that living old plant bed covers will have no effect whatever on blue mold. Since the supply of canvas is none too plentiful, the specialists urge larmers to use all old covers possible and thus help prevent shortages in some areas. Blue mold does not carry over in plant bed covers, says Howard R. Oarriss, plant pathologist for the State College Extension Service. The two main sources of infection, he asserts, are wind-blown spores that may travel hundreds of miles, and old plant bed sites where the disease was present in previous years. Danger from the latter source can he reduced or eliminat ed by usiirg combination weed con trol treatment or other partial soil sterilization treatment.
