To this beautiful grand mother, that intended compliment is almost an insult. "It's meant as a compliment when they say, "isn't it wonderful the way you look,' " the sultry star reflected. "But it sounds as . if you should be on crutches by now. If you were talking to a famous, 50-year-old violinist, you wouldn't say, 'How do you still move your fingers?'" Dietrich told me she's 43, though the record-books say 46. At any rale, she first came over here from Germany 21 years ago, shortly af ter making "The Blue Angel". Well, then the inevitable ques tionwhat's the secret by which a woman retains her looks? "Glands, maybe," Marlene pon dered. "I certainly don't do any thing. No exercise or diet." Rules about sleep? She shrugged, smiled. and said that "very often" she gets by on three or four hours. A listener-in to the conversation suggesfed that refusal to worry helps. "I worry," Miss Dietrich said. "But not about 'myself. Just im portant things family, children, profession, war. But not about looks, weightmeasurements." "You look at Garbo today," sug gested Miss Dietrich, and I'd love to if the Silent Swede didn't live so like a hermit. "She looks exactly as she did then." Miss Dietrich was referring to her arrival in Hollywood from Germany in 1930. "And Joan Crawford. Do you htihk she looks so different? The Berlin-born star was gener ously making the-point that, con trary to a widespread impression, she has no special corner on glam-or-after-40. "I do not see when I look about me,' she said, "that there is such a change in anybody. Oh. of mnrw as the fashion changes, they look different in their clothes, and their hair changes: There are lots people my age in the film husi ness." Marlene speculated on why sne is oftne pointed to in senior-glamor bracket: "They just don t Jiappen to have grandchi dren." She has - two boys -age mree and one. As to her own age (43 by her admission; 46 in the almanacs): "Some people say , I'm 60. Some even say 90." , How does she feel when she bears that? "I just think these peo ple have nothing else to worry about." Sultry,- mysterious, low-voiced these adjectives come to mind when you talk to Dietrich. Famed for wearing slacks, she had come to her set wearing a dark blue pair. Over them, a pink dressing gown. Her red-gold hair was piled high in curls and ringlets. Hal Mohr, who photographed her in- "Destry Rides Again'' 13 years ago and is again her camera man in "Chuck-a-Luck," says she's as photogenic as ever. "No jowls or bags under the eyes," he point ed out. . All boys interested in playing softball have been asked to meet at Morning Star school each Thurs day at 5:30 p.m. for practice.
