The "awards were made during the com ,mencement program at the college. Mrs. Long Is Hostess For Brides-Elect Mrs. J. M. Long was hostess of a coca-cola party Saturday morn ing in her home on the Country Club Drive, honoring Miss Betsy Siler and Miss Jean Ann Bradley, June brides-elect. Arrangements of mixed garden flowers were used in decoration of the living rooms and a pink motif was used in the dining room. The tables was centered with a bowl of pink sweet peas and the buffet held a vase of pink peonies. Mrs. John E. Woltz of Mount Airy greeted the guests and Mrs. W. F. Swift invited them into the dining room. Mrs. Rufus Siler and Mrs. W. A. Bradley, mothers of the brides-elect, presided at the din ing table. Gifts of crystal were presented to the honor guests. Those invited were Miss Siler, Miss Bradley, Mrs. Bradley, Mrs, Siler, Miss Marguerite Way, Miss Mary Ann Massie. Mrs. L. B. Pictures made by Mrs. Jim Queen at the last meeting were shown to club members. Wilda Brown Gets Degree At Furman Wilda Kate Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walker Brown of ! Canton. Route 3. received the I Bachelor of Arts degree from Fur man University, Greenville, S. C. this morning. Miss Louise Martin left Sunday for Washington, D. C. after a short visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Roy Martin, here. Miss Martin, who is engaged as recreational worker with the American Red Cross has been assigned to overseas duty and expects to go to Tokyo immediate ly. During her visits here she had as her guest, Dr. C. Murphy of Vermont. UDC Chapter Holds Annual Picnic Meeting Around forty members of the Haywood Chapter, United Daugh ters df the Confederacy and their guests attended the annual picnic supper held Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sam Queen on the Dellwood Road. Following the picnic a short meeting of the chapter, was held with Mrs. Queen presiding. George Williamson, eighth grade student of the Waynesville High School, who won the declamation contest sponsored by the chapter, gave his winning speech, "The New South"; He was introduced by Mrs. W.' F. Swift. . Mrs. N. W. Garrett reported the sum of $76.50 derived dfrom the annual Confederate Flag sale. Mrs. C. F. Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Sam Queen were elected delegates to the National Convention of the UD.C. to be held in Ashtfville next November. Mrs. J. H. Howell, Sr., and Mrs. W. A. Hyatt were named alternates. . A Cross of Service was present ed to James Harden Howell, Jr.. descendant of the Confederacy, who served In World. War II. Special guests at the meeting in cluded Mrs. Harry Love of Ash e ville, district director, and Mr. Love and Mrs. Manson Shook, mother of Mrs. John M. Queen. Bill Davis Is Graduated From Clemson College Bill Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Davis, received the Bachelor of Science degree at Clemson Col lege yestenday. During his college years young Davis was an outstanding student and participated in various activi ties. He was a member of the Kappa Phi Kappa, national educa tional fraternity, which he serv ed as vice president, and a mem ber of the Veterans Club. He was also listed on the honor roll. After a week at Myrtle Beach he will spend the summer at home and will be employed as manager of Soco Crafts on the Soco Gap Road. Next fall he will teach Gen eral Science in the city schools at Anderson, S. C. Mr. and Mrs, Davis and their daughter, Miss Patsy Davis, attend ed the graduation exercises. Bob York, student at the Univer sity of North Carolina, has arrived for the summer vacation. AT CONFERENCE IN MONTREAT The Rev. Malcolm R. Williamson lift this afternoon for Montreal where he will be in charge of the Young Pooples Conference of Asheville Presbytery this week. Over 100 young people from the churches of the Presbytery are ex pected at the conference, with 15 leathers and counsellors.
