News of Interest to Visitors in Vacation;
Saga of Bill,
The Lady Turtle
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. AP
It takes four hours, 10 minutes
to reach Tacoma, Wash., by com
mercial airline. '
It takes 18 hours by car, aver
aging CO miles an hour. It took
Bill, a lady turtle, seven months.
Nobody knows whether she went
by the shortest route, made any
stopovers, or hitched any rides.
Bill's amazing journey came to
light when "Santa Barbara police
received a letter from H, F. Roufs,
of Dempsey Mill Road, Tacoma. It
said; "Dear ; sirs- The Tacoma
Chamber of Commerce tells me
that you have an Ashley Road in
your city. It couldn't be possible
thai a large turtle we found on
the road here painted in red and
white '119 Ashly Rd.' meandered
here, could it?" .
Yes, Bill belonged at that ad
dress and the owner was pleased
to hear she was safe. Plans were
made immediately to bring Bill
back to her grieving mate, Willie.

Fish Food
Typing Proposed
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. fAP)
--Where do salmon wander after
they swim into the sea from their
spawning beds in rivers?
Where do sardines breed? What
course do tuna follow in their
ocean migrations?
Scientists at Sdnta Barbara Col
lege hope to obtain answers to
these and other questions of in
terest to ocean fishermen by re
search into the blood types of fish.
Dr. John E. Cushing recently
launched the program. He and his
aides are studying blood samples
from salt water fish kept alive in
a special aquarium on the campus.
He expects to find that fish have
different types of blood, just as hu
mans do, and that through knowl
edge of the various types man will
be able to trace their paths through
the sea. A fish's blood will act as
an identification tag, identifying
him no matter in what ocean he is
found.
