' , Woman's Club Will Hold First Fall Meeting The initial fall meeting of the Waynesville Woman's Club will be held in the dining room of the Methodist Church Thursday after noon at 3:30 o'clock. The program, which is in charge of Mrs. Noble Garrett, will bp a panel discussion by members of the statt of the Public Welfare De partment. Mrs. Jack Klopp will sing. " v Miss Louise Ballard, president of the club will preside and hostesses wil be Mrs. J. V. Smith, Mrs. Bon ner Ray, Mrs; Harry Lee Liner, Jr., and Mrs. Claude Woodard. Jimmie Swift Enters NROTC At Georgia Tech Jimmie Swift, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Swift, enrolled today in the freshman class at Georgia Tech. He successfully completed the examinations required for ac ceptance as a regular Student in the Naval ROTC at the school. This week end he attended the annual freshman camp conducted by the Georgia Tech YMCA at Salem Camp Grounds near Atlanta. The purpose of the camp is to ac quaint entering freshman at the school with campus leaders, facul ty members and school organiza tions, . ; - Crabtree PTA Meets Thursday The year's first meeting of the Parent Teacher Association of Crabtree-Iron Duff school has been called for Thursday night by O. L. Yates, president. The meeting will be held at the school at 7:30 p.m. Considerable business is to be transacted, and the program will be limited to selections by the school band. Mr. Yates urged every parent to attend in order1 to become- better acquainted with their children's teachers, as well as to take part in the work of the PTA during the school year. DAR Chapter Holds Meeting The Dorcas Bell Love Chapter of the DAR met Friday at the home of Miss Martha Stringfield with Mrs. Harry Marshall as co-hostess. Mrs. R. B. Barker was in charge of the program. She read the pres ident general's message and re viewed other articles in the DAR Magazine. Mrs. James Harden Howell, Sr., reported that the CAR would have their first meeting next week. Mrs. James Elwood and Mrs. James Harden Howell, Sr., were selected as delegates to the Dis trict DAR meeting, to be held in Hendersonville September 25. Kirkpatricks Hosts At Dinner Saturday The Rev. and Mrs. C. F. Kirk patrick, Mr. and Mrs. William Sprinkle of Durham, and the Rev. Henry G. Sprinkle of Monksville were week end guests of relatives in Waynesville, On Saturday , evening Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick were hosts at din ner at the Towne House for mem bers of their party and Mrs. W. L. McCracken, Miss Elizabeth Mc Cracken, Mrs. R. C. Long, Miss Sara Long, Mrs. W. L. Kirkpatrick, the Rev. and Mrs. R. P. McCracken and Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Kirkpatrick. : Iron Duff Club Will Take Part In Fair Exhibit The Iron Duff Home Demonstra tion Club met at the home of Mrs. J. R. Caldwell on Friday, with Mrs. Caldwell, President, in charge of the meeting. The club voted unanimously to participate in the preparation of the State Fair exhibit by making draperies as well as preparing in dividual exhibits. A workshop will be held during the coming week for this purpose. Book reports for club members were completed, The demonstration on Tailoring Tips was given by the home agent. ... De votional was given by Mrs. F. C. Green. During the business session Mrs. Mark Ferguson explained the "Nickels for Know-How" program and asked the cooperation of club members in the promotion of it. Leaders reports were heard from Mrs. Francis Rogers, Mrs. Cauley Rogers, Mrs. Carl Green, Mrs. M. M. Noland and Mrs. Mark Fergu son. A demonstration on Tailoring Tips was given by the home agent. Special guests for the day were Mrs. Emma Pickton from South Dakota, Mrs. Henry Francis and Mrs. Bess Miller of the Francis Cove Home Demonstration Club. 1 Announcement has been made of the' engagement of Miss, Mary Alice Appleby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John 11. Bill Hem bree; was song leader for Aliens Creek, with daughter Mary -.Jo Hembree as pianist. Aliens Creek furnished a duet composed of Win nie Farmer and Joyce Caldwell. The two ..communities split the Softball games, with the visiting hoys victorious 3-1 and the host girls winning 8-1. Referees were Melvin Early and Tommy Owen. Iron Duff took two out of three In both men's and women's c)ivi sions of horse shoe pitching. There were no other classes, Contestants were Jack Long and Fred Brindle, and Mrs. Brindle and Ava McC Clure. Aliens Creek competitors were Moody Farmer and Hurl Al len , and Mrs, Cordy Allen and Mrs. Susie Craig. , . Harley Caldwell drove the trac tor course in 55 seconds, equalling the old record since broken. Other entrants in the contest wore Dan Davis, Lloyd Buchanan. Mrs. Edith, Milner, Mrs. DeWoese, Sybil Brad shaw, Bonnie Hentlrix and Don Franklin. ', equally gooa weather and an equally enthusiastic crowd made up the Beaverdani-Ralcliffo Cove Held day. Group singing was en joyed under the direction of Wil lie West of Beaverdam and Nancy Leopard of Ratcliffe Cove. The Surrett Sisters of Beaverdam gave two numbers, and Miss Leopard gave a solo. Another soloist was Iva Lee Messer of Ratcliffe Cove. Ratcliffe Cove boys' Softball team nosed out their guests 5-4. The Beaverdam girls swamped Ratcliffe Cove 13-2. Horseshoe pitching contestants were Mrs. Hugh Francis, Mrs, Ollie Francis, Bob Francis, Jack Pel met, Wade Francis, Ralph Jen kins, Betty Fclmot and Nancy Leopard, of the Cove; .and Carl Best, Fred Best, and Clay Scott; as well as others from Beaverdam. Competing on the tractor .conr.se were Nancy Mcdl'ord, Betty Kelmet, Jackie Fclmot, T, T. Muse, Mrs Robert Harris, Iva Lee Worley, Charles Clark and Waller Drown. Members of the Morning Star Parent Teacher Association have been invited to attend the demon stration of the new slide and film strip projector presented the school last year by the PTA. E. C. Duek elt, principal, will exhibit the equipment at the school on Wed nesday at 2:30 p. m. The meet ing was held at the Community House. Also on the agenda was a dis cussion of the Pilot Farm project, explained by Assistant County Agent Herb Sinlgetary. The group chose as their representatives the farms of Hugh Francis, Frank Leopard and It. C. Francis. Chairman R.
