All singers t ?ave been issued an invitation to ] oin in the special service. < Softball Teams Inaugurate State Tournament Monday Dayton Captures First Place In Knee Pants Loop i ThtvKnce Pants league ended its 1952 season Wednesday afternoon with unbeaten Dayton Kubber, win ners of the championship, edging Five Points 4-3, and the Waynes ville Scouts winning by forfeit from Goodyear. Day'.on managed to hang on to its unbeaten record by a decision made yesterday by league officials Earlier in the season Dayton had lodged an official protest as an out come of a game with Five Points fhe rhubarb developed when Five Points apparently had an over-age player on the Held. League officials decided to give the player until the end of the season to prove hig elig ibility by birth certificate, and let the game stand until proof was , presented. Five Points was the ; winner of the game. 8-7, the only ( logs suffered by Dayton during the i season. Softball tournament will get under way at Canton's brand new park next Monday night, August It, with four games slated for the inaugur al evening of play In this double elimination event. Competition Is expecled to be unusually keen this year between the twelve teams who will be bat tling for the Tar Heel laurels and the right to advance to the South ern Regional tournament which vt ill also be played in Canton be ginning August 26 The twelve entries include the ten district champions of the state, the defending champions, anu the host team. State-wide rains for the past week have delayed play in all the district tournaments, and yester day only three entries for the state meet had been definitely determ ined. They are the Champion YMCA. defending state ahampions: Burt ner Furniture of Greensboro, champions of the North Piedmont district; and Wheatley Motors of Fayetteville, champions of the Southeastern district. All three of these played in the state meet here last year, with Champion Y emerging as state champs for the third consecutive year. Two more entries will be de termined at the Canton High dia mond Thursday night a6 the West ern District tournament comes to t close. The winner of this event vill represent the Western Dis rict, and the runner-up will play is host team. State tournament play will open Monday night at 6 o'clock with iVheatley Motors playing the Northwest District champs. At 7 he host team meets the North last champs; at 8:00 Champion Y ilrs. 'etc Hicks, opened the service and welcomed those present, and then urned the meeting over to the lev. D. D. Russell, pastor of the liberty Baptist Church of this com nunity, who preached the morning ervice. At noon everyone was in ited to the picnic lunches spread in long tables in the yard. The afternoon was spent in sing ng of hymns and a few numbers ly the church quartet. All of the 74 graves in the Teague .'emetery were decorated with lowers and about 30 graves in he church cemetery were com pletely covered with beautiful lowers. Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Com nunity House, the regular meet " Ing of ffie Community Development Program will take place. A good a ttendance Is urged, and plans will be made to attend the field day v.ith South Clyde Community on August 22nd. I Canton Black Bears Begin Football Practice Monday The first call for football prac tice tor the 1052 season at Can ton high school has been issued by Coach Don Hlpps, who wUl put his Black Bears through their dirst a,ill on Friday, August lb. Coach Hipps is requesting all candidates for the squad to meet him at Canton's Memorial Stadium I at 10 o'clock Friday morning to re-1 reive equipment and be scheduled fur physical exams. He will be assisted this season by Coaches Boyd Allen and Buck Barkby. who have been operating the Canton Recreation Park this summer. The Black Bears will have a vet rran backlield this season, but practically all of their linemen were lost by graduation. The j spring drills were largely devoted to rebuilding the forward wall, but this department will still be i big question mark until the sea son opens. Ten games are on the Black Bear schedule this fall, six of ihem at home and four away. Six are Blue Ridge Conference contests. The platform series in the audi- j torium this week has been a side light of the South-wide leadership training school for more than 400 Methodist church workers in the' field of Christian education. Clem mons, Nashville, whose subject was "The Bible and Our Destiny." He is a staff member of the Methodist Board of Education, sponsor of the ! school. Dean of the school is the Rev. j M.
