WTHS Band Proposed . As
State Representatives At
Chicago Lions Convention
The Waynesville Lions Club went
on record this week recommend
ing to State Lions officials that
the Waynesville Township High
School Band represent the State
at the Lions National Convention
to be held in Chicago in July.
A definite decision will not be
made as to which band will repre
sent North Carolina at the con
vention until arly January, when
the parade committee will have
its meeting. Lawrence Leather
wood, local Lion, is one of the com
mittee and presented the Waynes
ville Band to the group.
Mr. Leatherwood stated that he
would do all in his power to see
that the invitation came to Way
nesville.
The rules and regulations stale
that the band to represent the
State in the Lion gathering must |
be 100 pieces or more, and after
discussing the possibilities of taking |
the tbcal band to the convention
with band ? director Charles Isley,
he stated that his band woud be
at least 100 strong with the neces
sary number of majorettes and a
drum major and that the band
could meet all other requirements.
The state organization has set
aside approximately $4,000 to take
one or two bands from North Caro
lina to Chicago. If more than one J
band is chosen, the money will be
divided, but if only one band goes
to the gathering the full amount
will be given to tyiis band.
Charlie Isley estimated that it
would take around $6,000 to make
the trip to the windy city and stay
there for approximately one week.
The members of the band have
agreed to save their money and
pay around $30 apiece to make the
trip. If the state group of Lions
send two bands, that will leave
approximately $1,000 to be raised j
by the local club.
The local Lions were very en
thusiastic about the proposal and
stated that they would raise the
necessary amount some way. They
also stated that the band deserved
a trip of this nature, not to men
tion the amount of publicity this
section of the state would receive
from such a venture.
It was noted that the trip would
not interfere with any school work
of the students, as school would be
recessed for the summer.
Director Charles Isley has agreed
to postpone a quarter of his sum
mer school in order to take the
band to Chicago. Mr. Isley has
been spending his summer vaca
tions attending school at Appa
chian State Teachers College.
A number of the Lions and their
wives plan to make the trip if the
local band goes, and some of them
will, probably be used as chape
rones for the musicians.
