A _ a ta ? ? r REPORT TO THE PEOPLE 1 By I Senator Willis Smith WASHINGTON ? The appoint ment of Charles E. Wilson to be Secretary of Defense, as you know, raised quite a furor. There were those who did not think that the president of the largest corpora tion in the nation should be made Secretary of Defense. Others were willing to go along with the suggestion that if Mr. Wilson disposed of his own per sonal stock that he would then be qualified. But there were those who felt that as long as he had an in terest in the General Motors pen sion, and as long as Mrs. Wilson and other members of his family owned enormous blocks of stock in the corporation, that Mr. Wil son could not avoid being at least "indirectly interested" in the pec uniae profits of General Motors Corporation. Personally, I felt that Mr. Wilson was not qualified under the law? and that is the position I took when the question of confirmation came to a vote. I made a few remarks to the Senate to state my views. However, the Senate voted over whelmingly to confirm Mr. Wilson. I am having some copies of my speech in the Senate printed for distribution to North Carolinians who may be interested in knowing why I voted against a man of such ability and integrity as Mr. Wil son. If you would like a copy, write to me. Room 345, Senate Office Building, Washington. I have never raised any ques tion as to his ability or integrity. Rather, my opposition was based on the age-old principle that no man can serve two masters. RUSSELL TO SPEAK Senator Richard B. Russell of Georgia has accepted the invita tion tendered him by National Committeeman Bob Doughton to address the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner in Raleigh on February 28. This should be a significant oc casion. Senator Russell tells me that he is looking forward with j much pleasure to going to North1 Carolina again?and to seeing his many loyal friends from our State, i He hasn't forgotten how those, friends stuck by him last July dur ing the Chicago Convention. TIIE VF.F.P That lovable gentleman who will always he known as "The Veep"1 announces that he will have a television program on Sunday nights. When the ex-Vice President was talking with newsmen about the program, somebody asked how much he was going to be paid. His answer, as usual, was a quip: "Not near as much as I'm worth." I miss Vice President Barkley in the Senate. He has been most gracious to me since the first day I arrived here. He continued that graciousness up through my ap pointment last year'as chairman of the American delegation to the In terparliamentary Union at Bern, j Switzerland. Mr. Barkley has many friends in North Carolina, and I have reassured him of that repeat-i edly. BROWNELL QUIZZED Herbert Brownell, Jr., was be fore our Judiciary Committee the! other day and was questioned quite realistically by members of the committee on his views about law enforcement and the functions of his ofTice-r-as well as his ideas about the responsibility of cabinet members as public officials. Everyone was satisfied that Mr. Brownell is an intelligent individu al. an able lawyer, and a politician who will doubtless take great pride in performing his services in the i proper manner. He realizes that if he doesn't do that, then he will have the Judiciary Committee on his trail immediately. I was well pleased with his ap pearance. He expressed himself as fully believing in the principles of our constitution, that ours is a E.IIW i iiiiiciii wi laws latum (.nan ui men, end that we should stick to those fundamentals. AFTERMATH Inauguration excitement has died down and Congress has been primarily engaged in considering appointments from the new Chief Executive. But people here are still talking about various things that happened during the inaugur ation. For example, perhaps you read of the man who came in from the West with 5.000 silver dollars which he wanted to throw to the crowds watching the parade. Po lice quickly boxed this fellow in. They felt he would cause a stam pede. The man with the silver dollars, i therefore, went back home, sad and wiser. Last thing I heard was that he had converted the cart wheels into funds for the March of Dimes. ' TV VIEWERS From reports I have received, I think it is entirely possible that ?
