SABA JENKINS It tock Stephen Elliott the long and hard way to And that in his weakness lay his strength. When he came to Kinsman, Georgia, as the new pastor of the small Methodist church, he brought With him a firm determination to let nothing inter fere with the carrying out of his ; convictions. But his faith in him I self received a distinct shock and weakening when he discovered in his congregation, the beautiful Claire Collins. The thought that she was there in Kinsman was such a meijtal blow that his carefully prepared sermon scattered around in his brain like paper blown in the wind, and became meaningless to him. His widowed sister, Elizabeth Marsden, who, with her small son, made her home with Steve, quick ly realized what had happened and i a wave of red anger flooded her I whole being. She remembered, only too well, how the sudden breaking of Claire's engagement to Sieve and the, equally sudden marriage to wealthy Bruce Winthrop, had near ly ruined her brother's career. Later, after the services were over, Steve talked with Claire and learned that sne had divorced her husband and had come to Kinsman to be1 with her sister, Paula, the second wife of J. G. Kinsman, III, the autocratic owner of huge cot ton mills and the virtual ruler of the small to>vn. Steve, too, learned that Claire had been instrumental in his being called to this small church, and the fact that he was indebted to Claire was deeply re sented by Steve. Others playing large parts in Steve's determined resolution to make good in his chosen field were blind Mrs, Palen who lived a life of such beauty that it was a daily inspiration to the young minister. _ * Her son, Di ? * daughter ol r. . ^ divorced w ^ in the you: c pursuit i>i , , the great. ^ Ste\e - -it . visit tu the , , The hen. j man, ne.:. nearly can ^ brought to j of a hospi I brought u.ti, ,4 ! feeling >; t 1 in their oa. t Stephei. ,,ij gled ski in J ed a |>i" nl ing read 11 uM much i!..
