Annual FFA Father And Son Banquet Held Here Bethel Names Basketball Queen Nominee By PATSY FORE Pauline Sheppard. a Junior at Bethel, was chosen Tuesday by the Student Body to represent the Bethel basketball team in the Hay wood County Tournament which I will be held February 17. 20 and 21. The winner will be awarded a trophy after the championship game. Pauline is a guard on Bethel's first team. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sheppard and lives in the West Pigeon Commun- j ity. She has been in several con tests, reprsenting West Pigeon in 1 the Haywood County Tobacco Fes tival this last year and Bethel in ; .tlia Blue Ridge Conference Tour i imenL last year. Pauline plans to attend Bob Jones University at Greensboro ] next year. At present she is a i member of the Beta Club, the Stu dent Council, and is a member of the newcoming Bethel Band. Bethel MYF Has Valentine Party For Two Groups ? By FRANCES ROBINSON The Bethel Methodist M.Y.F. gave a Valentine Party to the | Morning Star and the Long's Meth odist M.Y.F. Saturday afternoon in. the Bethel School lunch room. Plans were made for the party by the President of the Bethel M.Y.F., Norma Jean Sheffield. There were approximately 110 present. Recreation was conducted by Principal C. C. Poindexter ' and Mrs. Welsh Singleton. In appreciation of the coopera tion of Mrs. Charles Terrlal, the lunch room manager, and G. T. Shipman. custodian, a gift was pre sented to them by the M.Y.F. Refreshments were then served by the host. The Bethel Chapter of the Fu ture Farmers of America held its annual Father and Son banquet in the school cafeteria Thursday, Feb ruary 12. at 7 o'clock. The banauet came to order by an invocation by the Rev. L. B. G'orge. pastor of the Bethel Meth odist Church. The officers then held the open ing ceremony, which was followed by a welcome by the advisor, M. C. Nix. Following dinner Bobby Mease offered a toast to all Dads present. George Stamey returned the ges ture with a toast to all sons. James Shipman. president of the club, spoke at length on the gen eral purposes and aims of the club, and told something of the group's activities for this year. The treasurer, Roy Green, gave the regular report, which was fol lowed by the presentation of the Green Hand pens by the secretary. Troy Hargrfeve. C. C. Poindexter followed with some general remarks and explain ed to the Dads some of the great needs for equipment for the school and teachers. Following the closing ceremony a movie about F.F.A. work was presented. Members expressed thanks to all those who helped to make the ban quet a great success. They especially wished to thank the mothers who prepared the meal and the girls who volunteered and. under the supervision of Mrs. Phoenix, served it. PIGEON VALLEY CALENDAR OF EVENTS Tuesday. Bethel Beautification Club Makes Improvements Bethel F.H.A. I Makes Plans For County Rally By FAYE SHARP The Bethel F.H.A. met Thursday; February 12, 1953, with the pres ident, JoAnn Brown, presiding. The Chapter discussed plans for the Haywood County F.H.A. Rally which will be held at Bethel some time in May. The Chapter discussed plans for the making of a song book which will be used at the rally. The song book will be covered in red with the F.H.A. emblem on the front. The book will contain some 20 songs. Clara Mae Henson was named chairman of the committee in charge of the book. Other mem bers of the committee are Lillian i Brown, Shirley Dotson and Faye | Sharp. The County representatives. ; Frances Robinson and Imo Jean Powell, accompanied Miss Massic to Waynesville Thursday to make further plans for the rally. Founder's Day To Be Observed By Bethel P-TA The Bethel Parent-Teachers As sociation will observe Founder's Day at the regular meeting Thurs day, February 19. at 2 o'clock. Mrs. R. G. Chason. president, will be in charge of the meeting, which is to take place in the school auditorium. Others on the program are the Rev. Gay Chambers, devotional; Miss Bernice McElhannon, in charge of a play; Jean and Sue Kelley, vocal selections. Refreshments will be served in the school lunch room by the fifth grade parents and teachers. At the end of the program a ?silver offering will be taken. 5th GRADE NEWS Miss McElhannon's fiifth grade gave a very interesting program in chapel Friday morning. The class has been studing poet ry. They have learned many poems that are related to events in his tory. Among the poems they have studied are: "Valley Forge." "Co lumbus Day," "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere." They also studied February heros. Washington. Lin coln and Longfellow. JOURNALISM CLUB The Jouranlism Club met Tues day, February 10. for their regular meeting in Mr. Bonarrigo's room. Jo Ann Brown, editor, presided. The club talked over business of , interest to all members. Following business, the club had a Valentine party. Frances Robinson, Jo Ann Brown and the social committee was in charge of refreshments. The club will meet again Febru ary 17. ! OFFICERS CHOSEN Mrs. Shipman's seventh grade have chosen their class officers, they are as follows: president. Ann Cathey; vice-president, James Pres sley: and secretary. Carroll Haney. DRAMATICS CLl'B The Dramatics Club will present a play entitled "Pipe Dream". The exact date has not been set be cause the Chapel periods are filled for several weeks. It is believed that many of the "witches" executed during the in quisition of the Middle Ages were practicing the pagan religions which existed in their countries before Christianity. By ZELDA MOSS, PEGGY HOUS TON, and RUTH ELLEN HENSON Mr. Nix, the Beautification Club sponsor, with the help of some of the F.F.A. members, has been working hard to improve the Beth el school grounds. In the following paragraphs are some of the improvements which have been made by the Beautlfica-' tion Club and some of the F.F.A. i members. Trees have been set out at vari ous intervals on the school play ground: wooden steps built to make a shorter distance from the' lunch room to the Home Economics De-1 partment; walks in front of the High School to the Agriculture Building and from the Agriculture Building to the Auditorium have been graveled: plans have been made to gravel the ground around the lunch room; in the near fu ture they hope to plant shrubbery around the cannery; and they have impending plans to build hot beds and cold frames so that they may raise their own shrubbery. Hopes for the future is that Bethel can purchase from Ander son Inman a portion of his prop erty for a football field. The Beau tification Club, if this property is purchased, will help in building the field. Cruso News By FAYE SHAP The boys and girls of the Cruso School played the boys and girls of the Cicil School in basketball on the Cecil court last Tuesday af ternoon. The Cruso girls won by a score of 45 to 18. Margaret Slepp was high scorer for the Cruso lassies with 20 points. The boys' game was closer as the Cruso boys won by a score of 20 to 17. Ray Hcnson led the scor-' crs with 14 points to his credit. ! The pre-school clinic will be held at the Cruso School Thursday,! February 19. All children who will | enter school next year should be brought to the school at this time, for vaccination. No child will be permitted to enter school next year who has not been immunized. Sunday, February 22, will be Li- \ brary Day at the Spring Hill Bap tist Church. The Church recently j purchased more than 150 new | books which will be placed in cir culation at this time. The Church j will also hold a formal dedication of its Library at that time. The1 Library was destroyed when the j church burned and a new one is being established. Anyone having' books they wish to give to the Li brary may bring them to the! church that day or they may give them to the pastor, or Miss Blanche lfenson, or Miss Mabel Clarke, at any time. School Annual Now On Press; Ready May 1 The 1!)53 edition of the Rrthrl llich School Annual ha.** cone to press. The publication will contain a number of new features this year. Mrs. Cathc.v expects to re ceive them for distribution on May Day, provided all full pay ments are made by Feb. 27, the deadline. Only 15 Annuals have not been contracted for at this date. SAM I FAJT ft?UU Student Council Holds Meeting By BESSIE FRIZZELL The Student Council of Bethel High School met February 11, 1953 Some new business was brought before the members by the presi dent. The Group discussed more ways of helping the faculty and students. A clean up committee was appointed in which everyone will take part. Every Friday at activity period the rooms and buses will be check ed. The committee for the follow ing month is composed of Jimmy Campbell. Bobby Mease and Jim my Mease. They were also appoint ed to raise the flag every morning The remainder of the period was spent discussing a trip by the Student Council and Beta Club. No definite time or place was planned. RIVERSIDE SOCIAL The Young People's class of the , Riverside Church had a social Sat urday night, Rebruary 7, at the home of Miss Grace Krwin. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis T Morrow, He received his elementary and high school education at East i Waynesvllle school and at Waynes I ville Township High School. He is a graduate of the Univer sity of North Carolina with a Bachelor's Degree. At Bethel he teaches biology, in addition to his | dutiis as band director. Doll Contest Held At Bethel High School A doll ('oiliest was held Friday, February 13. in the Bethel audi dorium by primary grade students. JOE MORROW Three T's Hold Monthly Meeting By ROSALEE MASON The Three Ts of Spring Hill Baptist Church held their monthly meettlng last Monday night, Feb ruary 9. at Mrs. Way Mease's at 7 o'clock. Janet Foster, president of club, was in charge of the meeting. Pat sy Wilson read devotional and Mar garet Mease led in prayer. Rosaiee Mason, assistant secre tary. checked the roll and took minutes of the meeting. The class is the Intermediates of the Spring Hill Baptist Church, between 13 and 17 years of age. They call themselves the "Three T's" which means?TRUE, TRUST ED, and TRIED. Their Motto is 2nd Timothy, 4:7. The Three T's leaders are Mrs. Gerald Blazer and Mrs. Hard in Pressley. The club was organ ized about five months ago. Refreshments were served by Janet Foster, . Margaret Mease, Patsy Wilson, and Barbara llcnson. Long's Chapel WSCS Hears Missions Talk The monthly meeting of the W.S.C.S. of Long's Church was at the hpme of Mrs. Bert Gregory, with twenty members present. Mrs. Jess Smathers. presented a short speech on missions, which was enjoyed by every one.
