Of course 1 had heard of her line spirit and un selfish activity in behalf of so many others, but it was not until I interviewed this famous woman who lives in a sightless, soundless world that her significance was brought home. Her full n^me is Helen Adams Keller and though she has never enjoyed seeing and hearing, hers is a voice which chal lenges all humanity to be better. She spoke to me through an interpreter, hut even so, the great ness of her powerful personality shone through. She said we should all he thankful, regardless of any disability. It was really gripping to hear her say she was so grate ful for her many blessings. Talk ing to her is a memorable experi ence. Helen Keller is the most electrifying pel-son I have ever in terviewed. 3 The elderly man was smartly dressed with sU'iped trousers and a dark coat which although perhaps a bit worn were handsome and fashionable. As he ambled along the sidewalk, I noticed a small red flower in his buttonhole, and a pert look in his still-sharp eyes. At a large street waste can he paused, looked around a bit. then went over to it and with striking precision, dug down into the rub bish hean and from the bottom ex traeted a copy of the day's Herald-j Tribune which he promptly took along with him. , 3 A local lawyer-friend said that in studying the history of Ameri can law. he learned that the fron tiersmen of our earliest states had a great contempt for lawyers in ] general. As an example, he gave j I the case of the Connecticut fron i tiersnian who in 1790 was jailed for manslaughter and protested against what he felt was an* outrage, as fol lows: "It's gittin" so. ye can't put | an inch or so of a knife into a fel-: ! low. or lam him over .the head with ; i a stick of wood, but that every lit tle lackey must poke his head into the matter, and has the law on ye. Then after the witnesses swear ' their pack of lies, and the lawyers I get their word in. that old cuss of | a judge sets up there and has his say-so. I tell ye 1 won't stay In no slch country. I'm goin' to Tex as where a man can have more peace and less interference." 3 Randolph Scott Is being talked about along Broadway as the easy going western-picture actor who has graduated from the cow-punch in' films to smoother roles. Scott hails from Charlotte. N.C. and is one of those fortunate individuals who seems able to keep his good looks and vitality up and his waist line down. He still makes western pictures when he wishes, too. They arc sure money-makers, what with television markets for them in creasing. And apparently actor: enjoy making them as much as most folks like to see them. 3 What next? Now in one of lh< large railroad stations here, therr is serve-yourself dry cleaning and pressing. Oh you have to get ou' of your clothes for the rcnovatint Mississippi Pearl-Hunters McGREGOR. Iowa <APt?They're hunting pearls again in the Upper Mississippi River near here after a lapse of nearly 40 years. Clamming and pearl-hunting was a boom industry here in the 1890s. but the river was "clammed out" several years ago. Now. fishermen report the clams are coming back. Two fishermen?Albert Langs ford and Norman Delphy?have re ported finding large pekrls. Lang ford sold his for $400. and Delphy's brought $225. Even if no pearls are found, the fishermen ran always sell the clam shells. Pearl button factories pay 2VS cents a pound for them. operation, but you can just slip them into a big shiny box like a refrigerator, pick up a phone hang ing on it, and tell the "operator" your address, what you want done to the d ids and when. Then you take your claim check ? dished out electronically?and return in some hours hence, pick up said phone again, learn the charge, stuff in some coin money, and then ake your bright, clean clothing homeward.
