Rich. 77. native of Maggie and beloved physician of Candler for the past 43 years, died 1 late Thursday night in a hospital i near Asheville after a long illness He would have observed his 7tith birthday February 10. Dr. Rich was known as a typical country doctor who never let mat ters of weather or distance inter fere with making a call. His prac tice covered a territory of some 100 square miles and he frequent ly made trips of 10 or more miles to see a patient. He was educated in Haywood County schools, finishing high school at Clyde and graduating at Peabody College, and the medical scnool of the University of Ten nessee. where he was graduated with honors. After graduation from Clyde High School, he was a teacher for five years at Shady Grove School, attending Peabody College on a part-time basis. Dr. Rich practiced medicine at Dellwood for three years prior to moving to Candler in 1911. At that time the community was served by a macadam road and the top soil and sand clay roads that tied into the main artery of travel. It was the era of the horse and buggy and when he could not reach his patients bv this means of transpor tation, he rode horseback. It was said that he never refus ed a call and that he gave his full attention to his patients, the fee usually being secondary. 11c was often paid in meats, vegetables, corn, or other commodities in the early days of his practice. In addition to his service in the field of medicine, Dr. Rich served four years as a member of the Buncombe County Board of Edu cation. He was active in commun ity affairs and was on the Bun combe County Board of Health four years During Warld War I he was on the medical examining board at Camp Gordon. Ga. and was later physician at the Army tubercular hospital at Spartanburg, S. C. Funeral services were conduct ed Sunday afternoon in the Mont morenci Methodist Church with the Rev. R. P. Waugh. the Rev. M. D. Smith, and the Rev. T. A. Groce officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Activ pallbearers were William Kramer. ,1. Jack Cole. Jack Rus sell, Dr. Candler A. Willis, Fred Evans. Surviving, in addition to the daughter, are the husband, Dan. C. Gass; two sons. Marshall Gass of Whittier and Wade Gass of Bryson City. Also two brothers, Allen Green of Johnson City. Tenn. and Tom Green of Barnesville, Ga.; and eight gandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Garrett Funeral Home, er of Mrs. Hobart Arrington of Waynesville, Route 1, died Satur day in her ^ome near Whittier. She was a native of Jackson Coun ty Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon in Shoal Creek Bap tist Church with the Rev. John Hyatt and the Rev. O. J Beck of ficiating.
