Mountaineers Lose To Canton
In Overtime Thriller, 53-i

Mountaineer Staff Writer
If you ever hear anyone say that basketball is not an
exciting yame, you can be certain of one thing: he (or she)
was not at the Canton-Waynesville basketball game Friday
night.
Although the outcome was not a happy one for Moun
taineer fans, the game itself generated as much excitement
as any of Waynesville's football feuds last fall.
Even if you missed last Friday's hardwood hassle, you
still have one more chance of seeing the Mountaineers in ac
tion against the Black Bears.. Unless Clyde pulls the upset
of the year in the first round of the Haywood County tourna
ment tomorrow night, Waynesville will meet Carpenter, Mil
ner. and Co. for the third time this Friday nighf in the semi
finals at 9 a.m.
If you are one of these individuals who think that bas
ketball shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath with foot
ball. go to Canton Friday night and watch the Mountaineers
tangle with the Black Bears. You might be surprised.
Ca^e Comments
Even though they lost to Canton, at least the Gold and
Black lost in a different way and did not repeat their past
mistakes against Bethel and Ilendersonville. Refusing to be
left at the starting post Friday night, the WTHS boys were
off and running right from the opening tipoff and even left
the bruins far behind in the second quarter.
Another weakness of the highlanders has been in their
poor performance at the foul line. However, they got very
little opportunity Friday to improve in that respect since
only six fouls were called on Canton?an amazingly low total
considering the fact that the Bears used a press throughout
the game. On the other hand, the Mountaineers were charg
ed with every violation in the books?and a few others not
in the books, including breathing too hard in their oppon
ents' faces.
Probably the brightest spot in the game for Waynesville
was the outstanding rebounding and all-around perform
ance of center Gerald Baker, who provided the spark that
gave the Mountaineers a 13-point lead over Canton early in
the third quarter. But in dominating both boards. Gerald
W picked tip four fouls by midway of the third period and had
to play under wraps from then on to avoid being ousted from
the frame.
Every Waynesville eager who got into the lineup play
ed his heart out and it was a tough one to lose when victory
was in sight. Rut with sueh spirit, the Mountain Men will
be hard to handle in the tournament at Canton.
In adiUtiun to anotiuy Uattle-Imtween the Waynesville I
and Canton boys, another thrilling clash that seems likely :
to come about is a third meeting between the WTIfS girls'
and the Bethel Relies?rated No. 1 and 2 in the county re
sooctively. (The Mountainettes are also rated the mostest of
the bestest in Western North Carolina these days.)
Waynesville took both games the two teams have play
ed this season.
All in all. one thing appears certain: you won't be de
manding your money back if you come to the Haywood Coun
ty tournament this week.
It's Rough AH Over
Life is full of surprises for a Mountaineer sports writer.
According to the schedules furnished us at the start
of the basketball season. Fines Creek and Crabtree-Iron Duff
were supposed to have wound up their regular basketball
season last Tuesday, and Clyde was scheduled to be idle on
Friday.
However, all three of the teams were in action Friday
night?to our surprise and embarrassment.
Rut, like pur friend Mortimer Snerd says, "That's the
way it goes?and sometimes it gets worse!"
IntroHucine Basketball Plavers?A Fine Idea
We very much approve of the idea of introducing bas
ketball players on the public address system at the start of
a game?as Bethel does on its home floor. Since programs are
not used, it serves to introduce the cagers to the public ?
who usually don't know the opposition's players, and even
sometimes their own.
This practice is carried on in the "big time." Two places
where this is done is in the Chicngo auditorium at college
basketball doubleheaders there, and in the University of Ken
tucky Coliseum?home of the nation's No. 1 quintet, the
Wildcats.

Ihe tide turned and Canton got
back into the ball game?largely

racked up 21 points while the
Mountaineers could manage only
12?as they spent most of their
time lined up around the basket
while the Canton cagers staged a
free-throw exhibition.
Waynesville was still ahead by
one point at, 39-38 at the end of
the third quarter, but it was all
ti?d up at 48-all at the end of the
game.
In the three-minute overtime,
it was Bobby Williamosn who gave
the Bears the victory with two
timely layup shots._ He got only
two points the remainder of the
game. Charlie Carpenter, held
without a field goal in the first
