> The Sports Scene PBO and CON By BOB CONWAY Mountaineer Staff Writer Salute To The Mountainettes Other coaches in the Blue Ridge Conference are prob ably beginning to suspect that Carleton E. Weatherby car ries magnets in his pockets ? that kind that attracts con ference championship trophies. After carting off the Blue Ridge gridiron title last fall, rival mentors probably figured that they wouldn't have to contend with the Waynesville wizard until next September. But what happens? After the sound and the fury of the 1953-54 basketball campaign have died away, whose girls' team is on top of the heap? Yeah, you guessed it ? Waynes ville. Against some very formidable opposition, the sensation al sextet from WTHS ? Linda Welch, Betty Smith, Shirley Jones, Margaret Walker, Joyce Hamilton, and Imogene Hoop er ? came out on the fat end of the score in 17 out of 19 games. And when they were beaten, it took two other fine Hay wood County teams to do it ? Crabtree - Iron Duff and Bethel. No "furriners" ever were able to stand up to the powerful Mountainettes. The Waynesville girls, coached by Mr. Weatherby and Margaret Perry, showed the stuff that they're made of in their loss in the tournament finals to Bethel. That defeat must have been a heartbreaker, but each of the six Moun tainettes came out of the fray with' a smile on her face. Instead of breaking into a shower of feminine tears," the girls bore their disappointment like real champions. Canton Wuz Robbed This week the Canton Black Boars will have an excellent opportunity to "prove" that coaches of the Blue Ridge Con ference erred when they awarded the conference basketball championship to Hendersonville instead of Canton. Offhand, it appears that the boys from the Paper City were victims of a fast shuffle ? in view of the fact that they walloped Hendersonville twice during the regular season. (How many times do you have to beat a team around here to convince people of your strength?) Canton's claim to the Blue Ridge title got a further boost 1 Saturday night when Hendersonville lost out in the finals of I the conference tournament to Sand Hill ? a team that the bruins battered recently. Tournaments are not always indicative of a team's abil ity. but it's usually the real champions that come through when a showdown comes, and that's what Canton did in the Haywood County hardwood circus last week. Whether you like it or not. the Black Bears led the rest of the field by a country mile. Waynesville's boys won the Blue Ridge football cham pionship and the WTHS girls captured the girls basketball championship. It's our contention that the boys champion ship also belongs in Haywood County ? to Canton. If the Mountaineers are unsuccessful in their encounter with Hendersonville tomorrow night, we hope that the Bears | will carry the county's colors to victory. I Waynesville - H'dersonville Canton - Swain High Tangle In A A Playoffs Tuesday | When they meet Hendersonville! Tuesday night in the AA playoffs' at Knka. the Waynesville Moun taineers will attempt to take ad vantage of their last chance this season to regain the early form that carried them to the No. 3 rat ing in Western North Carolina behind only Hendersonville and Asheville School. YVaynesvillc won its first six games in a row?including an im pressive 55-41 victory over Canton - but Hendersonville and Bethel came along and the Mountaineers have never looked quite the same since then. Coach Swift's cagers played an| outstanding game in the second encounter with Canton, although they lost by 53-50, in an overtime i period But. only a week later, the j highbinders never got into the ball game in losing to the Black Bears, j in the semi-finals of the Haywood] County tournament last weekend at Canton. However, the Mountaineers' top scorer. Joe Aldridge, missed the Canton tournament because of an ankle Injury, but will be ready for duty against the Bearcats Tues day night. Canton and Swain High of Bry son City, Smoky Mountain Confer ence champions, will play at 7 30, and Waynesville will meet Hender sonville at 8 30. Traffic Tickets Stick WINTER HAVEN, Fla (/P) ? Patrolman James O. Holly prided himself on his record of never tearing up a traffic ticket once he'd written it. On the day he re signed from the force, his last tick et was hung on his own car. illegal ly by his wife. He paid the fine. j Standings In CDP League Saunook girls and East Pigeon and Humany boys flnrshed on top of the standings in the CDP bas ketball league this year, according to an announcement today by Steve Cassell, in charge of the league. In the boys' division of the tour nament, Sand Hill upset Hender sonville, 52-50 in a "sudden-death" i overtime after the two teams were j deadlocked at the end of the game and one regular overtime, period. Sand Hill was defending tourna-, ment champion, but Henderson ville has been named on the con- j ference chamuion on its regular season record. In the girls' game the Mountain ettes led Sand Hill, conference run ner-up, all through the contest, and outscored their opponents in all except the final quarter. Linda Welch tossed in 33 points for Waynesville, while Shirley Jones added 12 and Betty Smith 11. Betty Lou Wilson turned in an outstanding performance for Sand Hill with 27 points. The tournament queen. Miss Gerringer. was also named Key Club queen last December. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H.1 Gerringer of Hazelwood. Another Waynesville girl, Mary Lou Ferguson, was queen of the 1952 Blue Kidge tournament. The Blue Ridge meet was con siderably weakened by the loss of two conference mainstays ?
