The account of the accident is taken from The Morganton News-Herald, j as follows: A 42-year-old pulpwood cutter s died, of injuries in Grace Hospital I Saturday morning a short time after he was crushed by practical ly an entire erne-load of pulpwood. Estes Rathbornc of Route 2, [ Granite Falls, was ducking beneath a load of pulpwood suspended from a heavy loading crane beside a railroad flat car near Table Rock Furniture Company when a steel cubic broke, according to the crane operator, Nathan Dockery, 49, of Andrews. Dockery said practically the en tire load fell on Rathborne. Dock cry. Henry White of Andrews, an other Vnlpwood worker, and Char lie Whisnant, who lives a short dis- i lance froin where the pulpwood was being loaded, all removed heavy logs from the unconscious Rath borne. The injured man never re gained consciousness, they said. Rathborne was working for Clitf Dockery of Andrews, a brother of the crane operator. The accident | happened about 11 o'clock Satur day morning. Rathborne was at l( mpting to guide the heavy load j of logs onto a flat car and when he j ducked beneath the load to help guide it from the other side a steel cable holding one side of the load broke, the crane operator ex / plained later Saturday morning to Coroner R. F. Setzcr. Setzer later ordered an autopsy and findings showed Rathborne died from multiple crushing in juries of the right chest with rup ture of the lungs and liver. Rathborne had been working for Uockery about three years. He lived in a pulpwood camp just across Castle Bridge in Caldwell County where more than a dozen families of pulpwood workers live. The dead man was born in Hay wood County January 5, 1912, a son of Mrs. Dovie McDonald Rath borne, and the late Sam Rathborne, He was married to the former Thelma Pendergast. Survivors include his mother, his wife, two sons. James and Vin son. and three daughters, Mary, Marjoric and Martha; and four brothers, Calvin of Waynesville, Rastus and Taylor, both of South Carolina, and Edgar of Waynesville. 'imtmKSl qour -tooa ?
