Knights of Pythias at Asheville
Tuesday night.
As state winner. George will
represent North Carolina in the
Southeastern contest at Spartan
burg. S. C. on June 24. The winner
there will participate in the na
tional meet at Des Moines. Iowa.
George, who was sponsored by
the Canton lodge, Knights of Py
thias. received first prize money of
$25 for this talk on the topic,
"Courteous Motor Manners and
How To Promote Them."

Atkins To Resume
Banking Studies
In New Jersey

ier of the First National Bank of
Waynesville will return on June
11 to the Graduate School of Bank
ing at Hutgers l^ilversity for his
second summer session. The ses
sion will be held on the Univer
sity's campus in New Brunswick.
N.. J., June 14 through 26.
Mr. Atkins is one of over 1,000
bank officers who will attend the
two-week session of the School,
which is sponsored by the Ameri
can Bankers Association. This stu
dent body?from 43 states, the
District of Columbia. Alaska. Puer
to Kico. and El Salvador?repre
sents a capacity enrolment.
The Graduate School was found
ed in 1935 by the A B A. to pro
vide an opportunity for advanced
study for experienced bankers. The
faculty for the 1954 session, num
bering 58 regular members and 34
special lecturers, consists of out
standing bankers, lawyers, educat
ors. bank supervisors, and govern
ment officials. During the session,
they will cover all phases of bank
ing, economics, law. government,
and related subjects. Four major
subjects are offered by the School
?commercial banking, trusts, in
vestments, and savings manage
ment. Mr. Atkins is majoring in
Commercial banking.
To qualify for graduation,' Mr.
Atkins must attend three of these
summer sessions at Rutgers. In ad
dition. he must complete two years
of extension study at home and
write a thesis based upon original
research in some phase of finance.

The body of Sergeant Arnold
Lloyd Morgan of Canton, who was
killed in action in Korea, is being
returned to Canton for funeral
services and burial.
The body will arrive Sunday and
wil Ibe taken to the chapel of
Wells Funeral Home.
Sgt. Morgan was also a World
War II veteran.
Graveside services will be held
Sunday ut 3 p.m. in the V. F. W.
Memorial Plot at Bon-A-Ventlire
Cemetery. Members of the Ed
wards-Clark-Mcsser Post No. 5108,
Veterans of Foreign Wars will con
duct military rites and serve as
pallbearers.
Surjyving are the stepfather and
mother. Mr and Mrs. Wesley Har
bin of Canton: one brother. Pvt.
Hufus Morgan of the U. S. Army;
two sisters. Mrs. James Garren
and Mrs. Stewart Srnathers of
Canton.

J. M. Hunter
At Age Of 92
Joe M. Hunter, 92, a retired
farmer of the White Oak section of
Haywood County died yesterday i
in a hospital.
He was the only surviving child
of the late Jackson and Margaret
Hunter.
Surviving are one son, Harrison '
Hunter of Waynesville, HFD 4;
four daughters, Mrs. Charlie G'ald
v.ell of Waynesville RFD 3; Mrs.
Joe Teague of Clyde RFD 2; Mrs.
Pearsan Caldwell of Waynesville
RFD 2; and Mrs. Pink Messer of
Newport News. Va.; 18 grandchil
dren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
He had been a member of the
Pigeon Baptist Church for the past
35 years.
The body has been taken to the
home of a daughter, Mrs. Pearson
Caldwell, on Waynesville RFD 2.
to await the funeral hour.
Funeral services will be held itj
the Pigeon Baptist Church at 2
p.m. Saturday.
The Rev. Forest Ferguson and
the Rev. James Coleman will of
ficiate.
Burial will be in the church
cemetery.

tornado apparently whisked a dog
several miles through the air, then
put him down unhurt. Basil Hil
ton. Long Grove farmer, said his
shephard dog, "Bob", went to his
bed in the garage. The twister
picked up the garage and carried
it awav. After the storm there was
no sign of Bob. But two hours lat
er he was at the door, frightened
and whining, Hilton said.

Dies At 80
Mrs. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bracken
Smathers, 80. died Tuesday in her
home in the Dutch Cove section af
ter a long illness.
She was a native of Transylvania
County, had resided in Haywood
County for 60 years and was a
member of the Morning Star Meth
odist Church.
Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. Vernette Muse and Mrs. Jack
Medford of Canton and Mrs. Worth
Wells of Hendersonville; three
sons. Quay of Canton. Vaughan of
Asheville and Glenn of Pasadena.
Tex.
Also two brothers. Hilliard and
Eugene Bracken of Brevard; one
sister, Mrs. Jack Ashworth of
Brevard; 10 grandchildren; and |
10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wed
nesday at 3 p.m. in the Morning
Star Methodist Church.
The Rev. Kenneth Crouse, pas
lor, officiated, assisted by the Rev.
Doyle Miller, and burial was in
the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Arthur Cody.
George Wilson. Loranzo Smathers,
Tighe Smathers, Lloyd Young and
Eldon Burnette.
