Hazelwood Hopes To Subdue Enka In Wednesday Meeting The thoughts of a possibility of ending the season in a tie for first place with Enka in the Industrial League, has spurred the Hazelwood team up for their game with the league leaders Wednesday. After dropping two heart-break ing games to Ecusta and slipping from a half game behind the league leaders to two games behind, the | Hazelwood club now figure their chances of tieing the league lead ers by winning all three of their remaining games. Enka must lose both of their remaining games to fulfill the hopes of the Hazelwood I club. The Hazelwood team dropped i both Ecusta games by a close mar ' gin, and will go into the game with ; Enka Wednesday afternoon hoping j that their close-margin jinx has J ; been shattered. The game will be at Enka. On Saturday the Hazelwood club goes to Beacon. Martel is now sharing second place honors with j the local unit. Both games this week are im i portant to the Hazelwood club, and they are working towards put ting "their all" into another vie-' tory. Recently council members of the Champion YMCA met and voted to sponsor a bowling league. This league will bowl on each Thurs day night, beginning sometime in j September, and will bowl on the' I Waynesville alleys. Last Thursday night representa tives of various departments in the Champion Fibre and Paper Com 1 pany Plant met with Jack Justice at the "Y" to formulate pre-season j plans, and it looks like at least i a ten-team league is in the making. The game left Hazelwood tied ; with Martel for second place in j the WNC Industrial League and darkened its pennant hopes con siderably. Both Hazelwood and Martel are two games off pace with only three games remaining on their schedules. Earl Johnson contributed a pair of singles and George Tesnow a double in the winner's attack. Plick's grandslam was his only hit. Jack Ammons gave up 11 scat tered hits to Hazelwood. Oliver Yount had two doubles, Floyd Teas had a triple and a single and Dee Stephenson had a double and ?? single. Little League Star Sets Sights On The Big Leagues Although he's only a Little Leaguer now, Jack Holder, Jr. of Hazelwood is determined to make the Big League one of these days. I And if he continues to improve, don't bet that he won't hit the big time. An ail-around athlete who has played every position on his Tan nery team in the Little League, Jack excells in pitching. Seven limes this year he went to the mound and seven times he walked ofT the field with a victory. His specialties are a fast ball, slow curve and a change of pace. I | Unlike many pitchers who are weak hitters. Jack clouted 10 round trippers this year. In 11 games, his team lost only twice. Such a performance brought : Jack a double award for his play ing and also for his sportsmanship. He also was named on the dis trict all-star squad for the third year. Although baseball is his first love, Jack also intends to play football and basketball at Waynes ville High in addition to the dia mond sport. This fail, he'll be in the eighth grade at Hazelwood School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Holder, Sr. of Hazelwood. Coach Swift Will Attend Sports Clinic i Bill Swift, Waynesville High varsity boys' basketball coach and Jayvee football coach, will attend the annual North Carolina Coaches ~ Association sports clinic to be held next week at Greensboro.
