I THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER laried Entertainment Planned For Canton Labor Day Many Will Take Part In Events ( Platform entertainment during Labor Day afternoon promises to be more talented and colorful than ever before in the long history of the annual event, program leaders said. An array of talent has been booked for the program. Fred Fer guson. general chairman of this department of the day's celebra tion, has announced. Among the square dance teams already hooked for the twilight dancing program are Ecusta, Can ton Recreation Park, Bethet, Groat Smoky Mountains, Bryson City, the Echo Inn Cloggers, national clogging champions of Henderson ville; the Connemara Farms, and the Waynesville Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Pigeon Valley Ramblers and Taft Crawford's band of Canton will be the stair bands for the plat form programs, Ferguson said. The Mathis sisters from Water ville and the popular Metcalf fam ily from Flag Pond. Tenn., will do Iheir specialty clog dancing num bers. Charles Haynie and Peggy N'or "is will do a lot of solo singing of mountain ballads. Fred Roper and his family trio have been booked for several num bers during the afternoon. Other musical grouns are being contacted '? round out the full platform pro ~ram. Ferguson said. Square dar.ce teams from every nook and corner of Western North Carolina will be on hand for twi light square dancing features. In addition to square dancing, 'herd will he plenty of individual entertainers plus many quartets, trios and choirs singing in close harmony during the afternoon pro gram to- be staged on the Canton High School athletic field. Many contests, carrying a lot of human interest, have also been scheduled for the platform pro gram. Morgan, president of the dub. said that a Palomino Class for the benefit of lovers of Palo nino horses, will be added to the iroup of horse show events for I he first time. Miss Nancy Jones of Lake Lure will give a special act with her Irick hore again this year. She lias been a favorite with the show for several years, Morgan said. C. A. Buchanan will be general j manager for the slow and Mrs. Hill Turner will serve as show secretary. The three horse show judges will be Lloyd Tate of Hlowit g Hock, hunter and jumper classes; H. B. Kelly of Hendersonville, galted and walking horses; and Mrs. El sie Edwards of Waynesvllle, sad dleequjtation classes. Samuel A. Bingham, Jr. of Ashe ville will be ring master and Read Wilson of Radio Station WWNC In Ashevllle will be master of cere monies. Order of events for the horse show has been announced as fol lows: (With the number of rib bons in brackets; a trophy will be awarded in each event). Lead line (8); hunter hacks (7); ponies, 48-inches and under (7); Palomino class, shown at walk, trot and canter (8); pleasure horses, riders 18 years of age and above and riders under 17 years of age (6) for each class. Miss Jones will perform at this point in the program and will be followed by the pony driving class (15); five-galted open class (6); open hunters, inside ring over eight jumps at three feet six inches (7); open waling horses (7). Pair class (12); open jumping (7); western riding (7); equitation, saddle seat (7); and hunter seat (6). Doll Show To Be Held Saturday At YMCA Gym Many entries are expected in the annual doll show of the Can ton Labor Day program, accord ing to Mrs. Gordon Rodgi-r*. chairman. The show will be held at the WMCA Gym Saturday. Registra tion for the show will begin at 10 o'clock, and continue until noon. From 12 to 1, the classifi cation will be made, and judg ing will be from one to two. The doors to the show will be swung open at two. and continue until four o'clock, Mrs. Rodgers announced.
