Gable, Turner
Star In War
Spy Thriller
Clark Gable, Lana Turner, Victor
Mature and Louis Calhcrn are the
stars of "Betrayed," M-G-M drama
in coloi| coming to the Strand
screen Sunday. The new picture
unfolds a dynamic story of ro
mancc, adventure and espionage
with the Dutch Kesistunce during
World War II.
Not only is the theme of "Be
trayed" one that has never been us
ed previously in films, but the pic
ture is the first to have been film
ed almost in its entirety in IIol
] land, with its unusual locations
shifting from the capital city of
Amsterdam to the Zuyder Zee.
Other backgrounds for the fast
paced action include Rotterdam.
The Hague. Volendnm, Delft,
Maastricht and Arnhem, still bear
ing the sears of the struggle be
tween the entrenched Germans
and Allied air-borne forces. It is
hero that one of the story's climac
tic scenes was filmed, thu specta
cular invasion in which 1,500 Al
lied paratroopers are dropped
from* the skies into the Arnhem
woods.
Tree toads make their musical
sounds with vocal cords, through
which air is expelled.
One whale smashed seven whale
boats belonging to two American
whale ships in 1879.
Heady Autumn Air Whets
Appetite For Out-Of-Doors
As approaching autumn brings a
hard-cider tang to the morning air,
even the not-so-energetic are apt
to dream of picnics involving a
brisk hike topped by sizzling ? if
slightly scorched?hamburgers or
hot dogs.
Within easy reach of Waynes
viUe lie numerous public recrea
tion areas, complete with water
supply and rustic fireplace. Be
cause of the ever p.-est nt danger
of" forest flrp, lighting of (Ires in,
national parks and forests is allow
ed only in the designated areas,
except by special permit.
Besides the developed areas,
here are countless spots, deep in
;he woods or high on a sunny rock,
:o beckon the adventurer who
aacka a sandwich and a hard-boiled
?gg and a thermos of water and
darts out.
There are three campgrounds on
he North Carolina side of the
jir^aat Smoky Mountains National
^rk. They arc the Balsam Moun
ain site on lleintooga Ridge,
imokemont beyond Cherokee and.
ust opened this summer, the Deep
-reck Campground near Bryson
-ity.
Heading from Waynes* ille to
'iscah National Forest the pirnirk
?r finds a round half-dozen devel
iped areas. First is the aptly nam
?d Frying Pan Gap. atop Pisaah

amping facilities are available.

limb from the Piseah Parking
Area. An even stifler climb is that
to the top of Lookingglass Rock, a
3-mile trail starting from N. C.
284, a tangent of U. S. 276.
Two easy-walking and compara
tively level hikes following the top
of Pisgah Ridge branch off at
Beech Gap. The road which ends at
the gap follows the West Fork of
the Pigeon River from Bethel past
Lake Logan. At the gap it is pos
sible to walk along the grade of
the Blue Ridce Parkway for sev
eral miles, construction machinery
permitting. About a mile from
Beech Gap is a dramatic overlook
up to the Devil's Court House,
with a steeo trail to its summit,
fn the opposite directioo a trail

pome the Parkway, toward Tennes- .

Nantahala Region
Easy To Reach
I
1 The extreme western tip of
North Carolina embraced by the
. Nantahala National Forest U ex
ceptionally attractive throughout
the year. Mountain peaks rising
more than 5,000 feet above sea
level, swift mouutain streams
broken by caseades and waterfalls
and wide unbroken stretches of
timberland offer a change in scene
at every bend in the road or trail.
Main highways cover the area
with service roads leading from
these t? trails leading to the more
remote sections where facilities for
camping, picnicking, bathing, bik
ing, fishing hunting, horseback
riding or motoring may be found.
These side roads and trails lead

Olden Handicrafts
Are Kept Alive In
N. C. Highlands
<
The mountains of Western North ?
Carolina ?re a treasure house for i
visitors interested in native handi- ;
crafts.
In shops and homes along the j
busy highways, and in cabins [
nestled deep in mountain coves, j
nimble fingers of hundreds of ;
craftsmen plying arts they learned j
in childhood, fashion a variety of |
articles which find ready markets, j
Travelers have little difficulty in
finding places where they may see j
handicrafts produced and where
they may make purchases. Numer
ous gift shops and handicraft cen
ters, which- welcome visitors who
want to watch the native artisans
at work, are in operation at re-1
sort communities and along or near j
major highways.
Several schools and some of the
centers olTer courses of instruction
for those interested in trying their
hand at various crafts.
Quality and production of North
Carolina handicrafts have grown
steadily within the past generation
through the efforts of schools and
other organizations which became
concerned that the native skills of
pioneer days might be dying out.
