Billy (irasty. and Harry Car penter at guards, and Jimmy Byrd at center. Dr. Madison, Founder Of WCC, Dies At 87 I>r. Robert Lee Madison, found er of Western Carolina College at Cullowhee. died Friday morning in a Waynesville nursing home at the age of 87. During an Illness of three years he had lost his sight and bectipic bedridden. A native of Lexington, Va.. Dr Madison came to Western North Carolina as a young man with a dream of establishing schools and giving the mountain boys and girls an opportunity for education. This was the beginning of what is now Western Carolina College. Dr. Madison served the college unti labotif 10 years ago when he was forced to retire because of de clining health. He was the son of Col. Robert I^ewis Madison, physician to Gen eral Robert E I.ee. Hundreds of students who at tended Professor Madison's classes will remember that his greatest Joy and delight was of relating his personal experiences with Robert K. Lee. He was a great-nephew of James Monroe Madison, fourth president of the Uiuted States. Funeral services were held Sat urday afternoon in Hoey Auditori um at W.C.C. with Dr. A. Rufus Morgan of Franklin, officiating Members of the Masonic Order were pallbearers and conducted graveside rites. Dr. Madison married Miss Ella Virginia Richards of Elizabeth. N. J. in 18IH. She died Dee 18 MM8, after assisting her husband for many years as a teacher in the college and an adviser in bis work Six children were born to the eounlc. Bethel Blue Demons Nose Out Candler Bobcats 7-13 Trailing in every department but the one that counts most?scoring -Bethel's Blue Demons took a 13 7 victory over Candler's Bobcats in Canton Saturday night. Bethel pushed across counters in the first and second quarters but wile forced to take a back seat during the last half as Can dler completely dominated the play. The Bobcats rolled up 11 first downs to Bethel's two in the last half and threatened thre$ times but were able to score only once, early in the fourth. Candler was stopped after a 56 vard drive In the third quarter hut late in the period launehed a 63-vard march that paid off in a touchdown early in the fourth. Lee Fanner was the sparkplug in the drive that went all the way on the ground. Marvin Guy seored from the four and Teddy Luther ran the extra point. Death Takes Mrs. Moody Funeral services were conducted I thir morning in the Hemphill Bap tist Church for Mrs. Laura Louise j Cagle Moody. 84. of Wavnesville. RFD 2. who died Saturday at her home following a long illness. The Rev. John Finger, pastor of Iho church, officiated and burial was in Brown Cemetery. Mrs. Moody was the widow of Ashury A. Moody, a daughter of j Ihe late Sylvester and Rachel , Barker Cagle, and a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. Surviving are three sons. (Van. killed in automobile wreck at mid- ' night Sundayi and Frank of Mar ion. and Jim of Wavnesville, Route I; five daughters Mrs. Mattie M. Owen, Mrs. Emma Howell, Mrs. | Minnie Barton. TO CHILDREN cviva Trounces Clyde (I Wet Field By 48-0 Scol Sylva High's Hurricanes rolled up 293 yards on the ground and 187 in the air to swap Clyde High, 38-0, on a rain-soaked gridion in Sylva Friday night. Charles Reed, pride of the Hur ricane backfield, was the offen sive spark. He ran for two touch downs and passed for three more. In the opening minutes of the game Reed ripped off a 75-yard run to give Svlva its first score. Before the quarter ended he pitch ed to Bobby Henson for a 45-yard marker. Reed's more most sensational p]ay of the night however, came in the second period when he ran 99 vards after the Hurricanes were backed uo to th^ir nne-vard-stripc by a penalty. The home team led 19-0 at the half. ^ In the last half Reed threw two touchdown passes to Henson. Billy Rogers made the other score on a five-yard plunge.
