No complaints of majo* dam age was received by any officer. Highway patrolmen, who said complaints were numerous last year, said they saw no violations and received no reports of any malicious mischief. Children playing "trick or treat" were active Saturday night, as were window soapers, I hut the fun was mostly on the innocent side. -as requested by the authorities. Smouldering Fire Seems Well In Hand Firefighters are standing by over the smouldering forest fire at ' Water Hock Knob, and hoping for more "falling weather." The area has had two snows and two rains, yet the fire is burning about three feet deep?like a pile of sawdust, according to James G Varner, Parkway Warden. The state units, under E. H. Caldwell, warden, are working with Park-1 v ay groups, in watching the smoul dering blaze. A wide road has been cut by a bulldozer around the fire on three sides, and a lane cut by hand on (he fourth side. Firefighters be lieve they have the blaze confined lo a 21i-acre area, and that it will not spread further. "We have good lines around the j fire, and leel that we will just have j lo stand-by and let rains and snows put out the fire, which is confined 1 o smouldering underground," | Varner said. Clyde Green Receives Promotion At Ft. Eustis Clyde L. Green. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde L. Green who re side at Route 1. Wayncsville, has been promoted to the grade of pri vate first class. Pfc. Green is pres ently assigned to Headquarters \ Company, 110th Transportation Harbor Craft & Marine Mainten-1 ance Battalion, Fort Eustis, Vir-j glnia.
