I Thinking Realistically About Life !E AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT MAN S SATISFACTION COMES FROM FEARING GOD AND KEEPING HIS COMMANDMENTS Scripture?Eccl' manti s 1-j; ? NEWMAN CAMPBELL HlS BOOK of Ecclcsiastcs is ?tdiations of "The Preacher," ? in Hebrew is called the ?kth. The opening verse tells ?at "the son of David, king ?erusalem," is the author. ? modern writers deny that ? the work of Solomon, but Hems to fulfill all the require Hiof authorship of the text. ? we cannot settle a dispute ? the authorship, we had bet- j ?disregard it and see what j ? lor our lives in this modern ? we can gain from the writ- j ?n Solomon, with all his ? and wisdom, occasionally ?moments of deep depression, ?ay suppose. When he wrote ?ook of Ecclcsiastcs he must ?d have felt that life was By worth living. ?n small children have their Hj"1* ?f discouragement. And he ??taught that even if carth ?p fails to comfort him he ? heavenly Father to turn to. who knoweth whether ho shall he a wise man or a fool ?" That would be another disaster to the man whose heart and mind were bent only on working hard to achieve earthly possessions. He might think of his labor as wasted if he was succeeded by one who squandered those hard-won pos sessions which he could not take with him. Solomon hail accumulated sil ver and gold, had planted vin yards and gardens, built a beau tiful house and filled it with serv ants, friends, family and music. With all these his heart was not happy? all were "vanities." "So I returned and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter: and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter." Our world is so much wider than the one in which Solomon lived. We have also experienced more oppression of helpless peo ple and cruelty than ever was known before. However, many who were oppressed turned to God, their Father, and were com forted in their affliction. Who was there to comfort their op pressors? No one; their guilty consciences must have haunted even their dreams. "He that lovelh silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he MEMORY VERSE us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear Corf, Hut commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." yWeaiastcs 12:13. !>f vanities, saith the anity of vanities; all The first deflnitioa of hat which is vain or useless." And I that lovrth abundance with in j crease; this is also vanity. "When goods increase, they are increased that eat them; and what ! good is there to the owners there of, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? "The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep." Solomon beheld wickedness even in the place of judgment, and in the place of righteousness there was iniquity. There arc so | many beautiful verses in the les 1 son assigned to us today, but we I shall have to omit them because of lack of space. "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them: While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the Clouds return after the ruin." The clouds seem to he lifting from the writer's heart, as he con eludes the book with these words: "Let Us hear the conclusion ol the whole matter: Fear God an< keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." That seems a simple enough solution to our moods, doesn't It ? whether we be young or old? Let us fear God and keep His "commandments. We can try. any. how. to follow the advice of this wise man who has been preach ir.g to tu. tn today I lesion. ... m . princgofpmg * Many centuries ago, in far-away Judea, a little child was born to humble parents. Its cradle was a manger. Its surroundings were poor and unsightly. Sympathetic village women must have ministered to the needs of the mother. But a brilliant new star shone above this humble _ birthplace, and those whose ears were attuned to the infinite heard an angel chorus singing "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men!" It was the birthday of the Saviour. This story has been told often, but it loses none of its charm in the telling. It grips men today as does no other human saga. For the birth at Bethlehem turned a new page in world history and gave new hope to mankind. Throughout the civilized world today people are sing ing Christmas carols and repeating the drama of the Saviour's birth. Some day, when His spirit triumphs, men will turn from war and strife to the peace that comes from God. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily. Day Book Chapter Verse* Sunday . ., . K. ,. *. i... Luke 2 1-20 Monday ...Luke 2 21-52 Tuesday .John 1 35-51 Wednesday..... ..
