CAGE COMMENTS: According to the calendar, Waynesville's
iasketball team had only a two-week layoff during the Christ
lidays. But against Mars Hill Tuesday night, the Mountaineers
like the\ had been gone two years.
Unless they are improved at least nOO per cent by tomorrow
the Gold and Black cagers would be wise to spend a quiet
g at home instead of tangling with the Canton Black Bears at
THS gym. Although the bruins have dropped three this season,
till pack a powerful wallop ? as Mendersonville and Bethel
lreaity found out.
Way It Happened
Here's the lowdown on just how a Southern California half
lanaged to run SO yards with a punt return through the entire
tate team in the Rose Bowl.
The way we hoard it. just before fullback Hubert Bobo drop
ck to punt for the Buckeyes. Ohio State sent in a substitute,
sub went into the game, he asked the man coming out: ''Who's :
n?"
Well, by the lime the retiring player could say "Aramis Dan- ,
he Trojan speedster had scampered for 86 yards and a touch
)r. . V'. '
That's the way it goes.
Little Country Boys'
Baron Adolph Hupp, coach of the highly successful Kentucky
basketball team, has always had the habit of referring to his
as "pore little country boys'' ? even when there has been
American or two on the squad.
This year, however, it appeared that his term would be corn
justified because the 1954-55 edition of the Big Blue does not
C- c
a single Well-publicized name like Frank Sclvy, Tom Gola,
lemric or Dick Iticketts.
Kentucky was supposed to be "rebuilding" this year and was
?rded as a major contender. But. with five "unknowns", the
s are now leading the country?? just as last year's undefeated
did.
lt'4 more than likely that the Cats won't continue undefeat
rthe odds are against their remaining on top of the basket
ip, but for a bunch of "pore little country boys," they've done

hand the Mountaineers their first
defeat. Although WTIIS has hung
up seven consecutive victories,
they have yet to meet a top-flight
quintet, while Canton has opposed
five powerhouses.
Despite their 0-3 record with
Buncombe teams, the Black Bears
have whiooed rugged Henderson
ville and Bethel and appear to com
pare favorably with the county

j and quelled the Mars Hill uprising.
The Wildcats failed to tally a
' field goal in the first quarter and
got their only two points on
Recce's foul tosses in the last few
seconds of the first ouarter. In the}
second quarter. Waynesville did
almost as poorly by hitting only ;
one fielder during the period.
WTHS led 11-2 at the first quar
ter. 20-12 at the half, and 33-24 at j
the end of the third quarter.
Nichols paced the Gold and
Black with 20 points and Joe AI
