Canton Five
May Not
Participate
Tentative plans for the third an
nual Haywood County high school
I basketball tournament, to be held
in the, Clyde gymnasium starting
on Tuesday. February 15, were an
nounced Wednesday by Coach C. C.
Poindexter of Bethel, who is in
charge of the tournament program.
Following the opening of the
cage meet on the 15th, the quarter
finals will be played Thursday,
February 17; the seini-finals on
Friday of that week, and finals on
Saturday.
Pairings for the tournament will
be made by "Don MeLeod, coach of
the host school, Clyde, at the end
of regular county play on Febru
ary 11. The top two boys' and girls'
teams will draw a bye and advance
automatically into the semi-finals
j on the 17th.
| Indications are that the Canton
Black Bears, top contender for the
county boys' championship, along
with Bethel, might not participate
in the Haywood meet in order to
play in the Blue Ridge Conference
tournament and the state playoffs.
(State rules limit a team to two
i tournaments.)
The Canton girls, however, are
expected to enter the county tour
i noy.
At present, Bethel is perched
atop the standings in both the boys
and girls divisions in the county.
Trophies and awards to be pre
sented will be to the two cham
i pions and the runners-up. to the
; all-tournament team, and to the
I two teams and individual boy and
j sirl displaying the best sportsman
:ship.
Individual sportsmanship troph
i ies will be awarded by Superin
j tendent of Schools Lawrence B.
j Lcatherwood and Fines Creek Prin
I cipal Perry Plemmons. The other
| awards are sponsored by the
i county schools.
Also planned in conjunction with
! the tournament are a queen contest
' (choosing the prettiest player from
i the six girls' squads) and free
throw contest.

Rat Paradise
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio fAPi ?
Pampered rats are an industry in
Springfield. Their handlers speak
softly and decorously to them
Their food is sterile. Their air is
rigorously policed for hostile or
ganisms. Temperatures and humid
ity are kept at constant levels.
Antiseptic rats, produced by
John M. Rolfsmeyer, are used as
living test tubes by scientists.
'A rat in three weeks completes
the cycle which takes a human an
entire year," Rolfsmeyer says.
? Their reaction to many foods and
drugs are similar to those in man."
Visitors to Rolfsmeyer's rat
ranch doff their coats and dip
their shoes in antiseptic water be
fore entering. These measures
will be tightened after he enlarges 1
the building to increase his 1,000
rat herd 15-fold. Then workers will |
bathe and don sterilized clothing
before entering.
Attendants speak softly to the
colony rats because a loud or raspy
voice might excite rats into killing
their young.
