Canton High Campus Cuffnotes By LINDA BRIGGS A barrel full of thanks are due ' Marianna Moon who wrote this a-ticle for me while I was cone. Because of Washington's birthdsy and no mail service, she was un able to get it in the Thursday paper, so if you missed it, look in Monday's Mountaineer. It was there! Free time is at a premium on the Canton High Campus this week with enough going on to satisfy anyone. The Seniors are running around in a daze planning for the annual trip to Washington which comes off in about three weeks. On the twenty-eighth of this month two buses with around seventy-five Seniors on them will leave for the Nation's Capital to be gone a week. Nearer at hand for the class is the Senior Play, "Father Knows Best." which will be given in the auditorium this Friday night at eight o'clock. Tickets will be on sale at the door if you don't al ready have yours. We guarantee an enjoyable evening to anyone who comes tomorrow night. Friday is also the final day of the Student Council campaign week. During this week, candidates for the Student Council offices of vice-president, secretary and treas urer are hanging posters and ban ners in the halls, passing out candy and chewing gum and doing every thing possible to win votes. Can didates for the various offices are: vice-prsident ? Charles Greene, Wiley Carpenter, and Roland Os borne. Secretary?Melissa Osbornfe and Joyce Smatbers. Treasurer John Ray Jamison, Marianna Moon and Kermit Hyatt. Voting will take place Monday, but until then, ex citemnt and suspense dominate the whole school. a . A great deal of suspense was also present in the Bethel gymnasium Saturday night when Canton and Hendersonville tangled in one of the most exciting and important games of the season. Canton and Hendersonville were competing in this game for the Regional Cham pionship with the stakes a trip to Sanford and a try at the State AA Championship. Perhaps everyone ku >*s by now that Canton won the game, and the Black Bear squad is in Sanford now getting ready for their game. All the students at Canton High have their Angers crossed and all of us hope the AA State Championship will And its way to this end of the state. The ball game last Saturday took the shine off the Central Meth odist Youth Fellowship Semi Formal Dance, but the group is planning another dance soon and hope to have it on a night when everyone will be able to come. The party was held at the Moose Lodge, and those who attended agreed the decorations and refreshments were as nice as could be had. Haywood County Methodist Youth were joined by a great many other young, people at the First Methodist Church in Canton Mon day night when the Allen High School Choir from Asheville pre sented a wonderful program of music. This is an annual event in the sub-district and one of the most enjoyable programs of the year. Last Friday in Chapel. Rev. Rog-' er Sherman gave a very inspiring talk which applied aptly to every student present. It was the opinion of the group that though Mr. Sher man spoke only a short while he said a great deal. The annual staff has taken on a new project in which all of you wfll be interested. A widely varied assortment of stationery, wrapping paper, cards, and ribbons has been ordered and can be purchased from staff members at a very reasonable price. The supply is not only limit ed but is diminishing rapidly, so if you haven't been apnroached about buying, why not hsk a stafT member about getting some for you. The Future Teachers' Club, which has baen reviewed in this article previously, held their an mud tea for the Canton tooebers laet Wednesday after aohool. The gym waa decorated to look like at garden in the spring with flower*, greenery and lawn chair* in the area which waa blocked off by sheet* hung from a wire running across the gym. This gave the gym a smaller effect and made It easier to decorate. At the Teacher'* meet ing the club gave a short program. Bonnie Matthew* briefly told the F.T.A. members sang several F.T.A. members sung several songs. The club is planning to edit a copy of the school paper, "Bear Tracks," in the next few weeks and give the regular staff a vaca Hon. The "Bear Track*" staff and the Student Council are Joining force* for what may be one of the biggest things that ever hit Canton High. Has anyone ever heard of "Twirp Week"? This is a new idea around the C.H.S. Campus, tyut the boys say it sounds good. During the week. March 14 to 18. the girls will ask for all dates, go after the boys, bear all expenses of the dates, open doors, carry books, and generally | take over the boy's Job. The girls must ask the boys to the "Twirp | Twirl," an informal dance to be held Friday night. After they have I asked their date, they must buy a tag which reads?"I'm taken for the Twirp Twirl" and the boy must wear this tag all week to show he's "taken". Sounds like a cute thing, and with everyone's cooperation it will be a big success. Nation's 4-H Clubs Help Train Tomorrow's Leaded] By NEAL KELLY ' County 4-H Council Preildent The youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. This Is a familiar saying, and a true one. The people are the nation. We will have a good nation if we have good citizens and leaders. We must have a good building program for the youth of today In order to have good citizens and leaders of to morrow. Here is where the 4-H Club organization may be of help. The 4-H Club program Is design ed to build character and at the same time build a future for the character. No man can build a home and community on character alone. He must know how to use his talents in a profitable way for his personal goals, ana also for the good of the community.' The 4-H Clubs train boys and girls to turn a "pastime" into a profitable business, thus making a livelihood. The 4-H organization provides opportunity through pro ject work in helping you select your work for the future. The 4-H program is well-round ed; giving time for work, time for play, and time to just learn to get along with people. I think the last item is one of the most important things youth of today need to learn. There are 1,723 4-H Club mem .bers in Haywood County. If the 4-H youth will grasp what all worthy organizations are offering US, we Will take the opp participate in the molding" program! ?? As leaders of toraor,! make the nation w?2 'name.
