New Wildflower
Festival Planned
In Kilmer Forest
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest,
3.800-acre "naturalists paradise"
in the heart of Nortn Carolina's
Nantahala National Forest, will be
the setting for the first annual
Joyce Kilmer Forest Wildflower
Festival May 15 to 22.
The festival, planned to acquaint
visitors with the primeval beauty
of Joyce Kilmer Forest while the
spring wildflowers are at the
height of their bloom, is not a con
ventional celebration but a series
of nature study walks through the
forest trails. The walks will be
conducted by Dr. A. J. Sharp, head
of the botany department at the
University of Tennessee.
Headquarters will be at Snow
bird Lodge, near Robbinsville,
where Dr. Sharp will give inform
al evening talks Illustrated with
color slides of flowers In Joyce
Kilmer Forest and elsewhere in
the Snowbird and Great Smoky
Mountains. The lodge is three
miles from Joyce Kilmer Forest,
which in 1036 was dedicated as a
Ohio produced 7 per cent of
ihe U. S. apple crop in 1900 but
only 3 per cent in 1934.

ASC To Halt
Purchase Orders

No more ASC cost-sharing pcr
chase orders will be issued by the
county office until about the mid
dle of July, according to A. W. Fer
guson, ASC county manager.
The purchase orders are issued
to farmers for fertilizer, seed. |
lime, and similar materials.
Floyd Fisher, chairman of the
ASC County Committee, explained
that the county's funds for spring
practice aid are exhausted. Reis
suance of orders starting in July
will be for fall practices, he said.

Operetta Set Thursday
At Junaluska School
A three-act operetta, "Scarecrow
Dick," with' a cast of 70, will be :
presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at
Lake Junaluska School.
The operetta will be under the
direction of Mrs. Marguerite 1
Carver. Mrs. Ruth Noland, and
Other Junaluska teachers.
