WASHINGTON REPORT By BILL WHITLEY ACP PAYMENTS. Legislation is still hanging fire that would keep Agricultural Conservation Pay ments and acreage allotment pen alties separate. Last year Senator Holland in troduced a bill that later became law which makes all farmers in eligible for ACP money who over plant acreage allotments in any crop. Early this year, the House was quick to vote to repeal the law. The Senate Agriculture Commit tee followed up in short order. Only Senator Holland, who is a member of the Committee, object ed to the new bill. STUDY. A special Senate sub committee, on which Senator Scott served, held hearings and found that the only opposition expressed was that of the national office of the Farm Bureau. Scott said that unless the Hol land law is repealed, some 150,000 North Carolina farmers will lose ACP checks. The Senate Agriculture Commit tee sent the bill to the Senate ? ?? I 3 Naval Reservists Now On Active Duty Three Haywood County men, members of Naval Reserve Surface i Division 6-18 in Asheville, are on active duty with the Navy for their | annual training duty.' Chief Machinist Mate J. R. Sor- < i ells and Chief Engineman Gerald W. Mooney, both of Canton, have been ordered to the U. S. Naval Training Station at Bainbridge, Md., for a 90-day tour of special duty. Seaman Fred W. Clark of Can ton reported this week for two weeks of duty aboard the Destroy er Escort USS Tills. Sorrells and Mooney are em ployes of Champion Paper and Fibre Company. , THIEVES ARE IGNORANT PHILADELPHIApTAPl?'Thieves I who broke into ttyp. antique gun and coin shop of J6hn J. Morasco neglected to read up on old coins before doing so. They selected some rare coins and three antique pistols valued at $200?but ig nored other pieces worth five times that much. Floor that, would repeal the law about two weeks ago. The Senate leadership, because many farmers were then in process of planting corn and other crops, made a move to call the bill for consideration immediately. Senator Holland objected to its being con sidered on the argument that he planned to offer an amendment. Action was then delayed until af ter a vote was taken on the Recip rocal Trade Law. Last Thursday, the bill was call ed again for consideration. Sen ator Holland sent a message to the floor that he was still unprepared '? for final action. Consequently, ac tion on the bill was postponed un 1 til this week. I Meanwhile, many farmers are ; still uncertain as to whether they i will be eligible for ACP payments this year RECORD, The latest official compilation of Senate voting rec ords show that Senator W. Kerr Scott has been on hand for every roll call vote in this session of Congress thus far. There are few lawmakers who ;are able to keep up a 100 per cent , voting record due to the rigorous ' schedule they follow off the Sen ate Floor. A breakdown of the records shows that Senator Scott answered the roll call each of the 32 times recorded votes were taken through May 1. In only one instance did the Squire of Haw River split with the Democratic Party, line in vot ing. Scott voted against the con firmation of Judge John Marshall Harldn as an Associate Supreme Court Justice while a majority of Democratic Senators voted for it. TIME. In addition to making special efforts to be on hand for each roll call vote, Senator Scott spends an unuscal amount of time on the Senate Floor listening to debate and familiarizing himself with issus before Congress. The Senator has also spent con siderable time presiding over the Senate and acting as majority lead er in the absence of Senator Lyn don Johnson of Texas. i 1, ? iti-tih . ? w\ DOr.'T DE HELPLESS ...
