Court buried liquor on his place. Davis' lawyer. In defending the small Canton man, told the court, "this defendant, father of 10 chil dren, and a hard worker, did not know about the liquor in his yard. He feels it was planted there by another bootlegger." "Wait a minute," Solicitor Bry son said, "You say another boot legger put it there ? is Willie a bootlegger?" A few minutes later "Lightning" was enroute to a cell in jail, to await further study of the case by Judge Moore. With five liquor cases in court, the Grand Jury made no mention of bootlegging in Haywood in their report to the court on Wednesday afternoon. In previous reports con siderable space was devoted to the liquor traffic. ' Solicitor Bryson told The Moun taineer he would call the case of Charles Howard Leatherwood, 17, charged with the death of Charles Weldon Gidney, Canton barber, re sulting from an automobile collis ion on May 2. Leatherwood was driving a car west on the four-lane highway at Clyde and figured in a collision with Gidney's car, which entered the highway from a street near the Clyde tpwn hall. Gidney was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he died a short time later. State highway patrolmen on the scene reported that Leatherwood was driving recklessly and speed ing. The 17-year-old youth was bound over to Superior Court on a $1,000 bond after a hearing before Police Judge Larry H. Cagle of Clyde. A large number of traffic cases have been cleared from the docket. Most of the defendants entered pleas of guilty as charged. Among the cases heard since Monday morning, include: Jack Way Kinsland, speeding, charged with cost.
