Rebirth Of Courage Is
Need Of Work, Audience
At Lake Told By Bosley
HTl.? ?* i I
j iic leuirm ui courage we neea
to face these critical days is pos
sible only through religion," Or.
Harold A. Bosley of Evanston, 111.,
said in his series of lectures at the
Lake Junaluska Methodist As
sembly.
"Once more the church must be
come a great teaching institution,"
Dr. Bosley said. "If we are too lazy
to deal with our problems then
they will be passed along to our
children simply because we are
afraid."
Dr. Bosley, former dean of the
Duke University Divinity School
and pastor of the First Methodist
Church In Evanston since 1950,
concluded his series of five lec
tures this morning at the lake. He
spoke at the closing sessions of
the Southwide Ministers' Confer
ence and preliminary to the open
ing tonight of the Laymen's Con
ference.
"Let the Christian Church be
ware of softness in this day of big
problems and little answers," Dr.
Bosley said. "We are overwhelm
ed by a procession of Issues head
ed by war and peace, economic
and racial injustice, but we have
big answers ? as big as the love
of God ? if we are Christian
enough to use them."
Dr. Bosley added:
"Signs of softness in our culture
are indicated by intelectual flabbi
ness, ethical insencitivity and
spiritual complacency. Our fear
of the familiar is one of America's
great dangers. Life is not an ad
venture but a mistake if we permit
familiar customs, habits, conven
tion and tradition act as blinders
to the social and economic issues
of our times.
"The familiar tends to smother
the meaning, mystery and glory of
life and to blur the sin and shame
of the status quo. If we refuse to
change or break with custom, in
stitutions and conventions which
are linked to injustice, then we are
in trouble with God.
"Christianity needs no apology,
but merely understanding."
