Tour Observations By W. C. MIlDFORD (pa 12th Ainul Farm Tour of J '7 P! Midwest) The section around Rapid City, S. D., is as "level as the floor" and a "sea of (rain". Ripe wheat and oats, short 3-month-old corn every where. We were told there are 4.000,000 "acres of It, and 750,000 acres of soy beans. We went for 30 miles without seeing any vegetation in the Bad Lands. The Bid Lands ? a devastating freak of nature, or whatever it might be?beggars description. Sci entists say that it occurred some 40 million years ago. The Depart ment of Interior built a good road through these lands in 1939. Now hundreds of thousands of visitors come here annually. On entering the area, one has a feeling of being transplanted 4o another planet?it is so awe-in spiring. so wonderful and strange The altitude is about 3,500 feet. We also visited an area of 4.000 feet elevation, around Deadwood in the Black Hills and Mt. Rush more Memorial. The remains of prehistoric ani mals, such as the three-toed horse saber-toothed tiger, the mammoth like elephant-richoceras. and oth ers. Their fossils have been found buried in the sticky mire of dev astation. _____ The soil in this section is gen- | erally deep black silt and require? j no fertilizer Three thousand acre' is the average ranch farm, and 9C per cent of the acreage in some , sctions is used as grazing lands They do not pasture closely in this area. ? Hakon county, which we visited Saturday, has 2,000 square miles being nearly as large as Rhode Island and Delaware. In all this county, there are only 500 farm and ranch units. The schools are small, averaging about five stu dents to a school. The children often travel up to 10 miles on horseback or in n Jeep to school. The food has been splendid on the trip and service excellent. Our welcome into Rapid City Saturday was spelled out on a huge salad dish. Nearly everyone seems to be de lighted with the tour and nro nounce it to be one of our best tours. / The Mississippi at LaCrosse, Wis., is wide but very shallow. Af ter crossing the river we followed it for many miles to Minneapolis. We have seen more corn. oata. beans, with some alfalfa, raspber rles, a few apples, and a little flax. Many on the tour are over whelmed by the abundance of ' grain, which is fed mostly to dairy herds. Sometimes the sea of grain fields would extend as far as the ey* could see. I At Minneapolis the men on the tour saw the operation of the Grain Exchange. An exciting place. It was hot in Minneapolis, but not too much discomfort from the heat. , About 40 miles out of Brooking. S. D. a tire on one of the buses blew out, and delayed us for about an hour. Otherwise we have been ( pretty well on the time schedules This level country, where buf falo once roamed, is flat, and af fords an opportunity to make good traveling time. We had our second tire blow out a short ways from Hapid City jS. D The group enjoyed a trip through the Museum of Mines at Rapid | City, Ru.shmore Memorial, Dead wood Gold Mines and the Passion Play Sunday night was wonder- i ful. It is all too wonderful to at tempt to describe in a brief d'' I patch. We have been running on time except for mishaps. Temperatures have been averaging about 96, ex cept for the Black Hills where it j was about 84. The average altitude in the Black Hills is 3.800 to 4.000 feet. Monday we saw a herd of some 200 buffalo. Also a few deer. The trip through the Spearfish Gorge, in the opinion of many on the tour, was the most wonderful of any of nature's marvels we have yet seen, even surpassing Royal Gorge or Niagara Falls. Dangerous Spot GRAND RAPIDS. Mich. <AP>? The Cascade Pharmacy is begin ning to think maybe it took an un tenable position. It is at the top of a "T" formed by U. S. 16 and the Grand Rapids Bypass, about 10 miles southeast of Grand Rap ids. Three cars have smashed in to it in a year. Each time there was about $5 000 damage and the first crash killed a customer. The next total eclipse of the sun which will be visible in the United States will take place Oct. 2. 1959.
