Open Champion The biggest worry on a downhill lie is a topped shot or a push to the right. Use a club one number shorter than the distance requires. Stand in an upright position close to the ball. Play the ball off your center. Keep your swing compact. Aim for the left because the ball should fade to the right. Stay down on the shot until well after the ball is hit. Friday, as Coach James Mayfield put the candidates through the first strenuous workout of the prac tice era. Much time is being spent on the isplit-T formation, and timing. The candidates are having two work 1 outs dally, and will continue on that schedule this weiek, going to the afternoon practice Monday when school opens. | "We aw getting along fine with 'the T, and the timing is getting better alt the time;" Coach May [ field said. The team is working hard, and there is some stiff competition for the various posts on the team. The lettermen back and working | hard include: Bobby McFalls, cen ter: L. M. West and Charles Cathey. guards; Clyde Duckett and Roy Warren, tackles; and Gerald Hill, end. Backs are: Rov Browning. Bud Phillips, Carol Henson, Henry Capos and. Gene Shenhqpd. ** Other candidates include Roy Henson and Eugene Me'sser out for tackles. Both are deevloping rapid ly, and showing uo well on defense In the guard slots are Joe Bob Fish and James fore, both hard hitting boys, with push, and alert ness. They are showing up well under fire of hard scrimmage. Doyle Warren is doing some nice passing as center, and is a steady blocker. Two of the best ends to show uo in a long time are John Russell, and Dale Sinvleton. Both towerinv about two inches above the six foot mark, and tip the scales at about 180 to 185. They are fast, and snatch nasses like veteran Dlavers. The tall, ranev men will be hard ?o push off the end oosition Thev have shown uo well on both de fense and offense workouts. Carol Lowe, at quarterback, is a rood ball handler, and is taking on fast to the ways of operating the solit-T svstem. Two other men out for quarter are showing marked improvement. They are Roy Browning, who takes to ball handling naturally, and has made Coach Mkyfleld smile more than once during the series of BOB ALLEN, defending cham pion of the Invitation Tourna i ment id shown making ? pott aa he made a practice round Sun day afternoon. (Mountaineer Photo). twice-daily workouts. Then there is Jack Wilson, also out for quarter. Jack is small, but fast, has a good head, and handles the ball ia a safe manner. Jack is good on quick to^s-outs, but has trouble seeing over a tall line. Carol Messer and Wayne Led better seemed determined to land a place as right half back, which has been held down by Shepherd. Both are playing good ball, and are excellent backfield material. Bill Conard is staging a stiff battle with Phillips for fullback. ConarA is also rugged, and a good line plunger. It is a toss-up as to who can come out for the left half back spot, whether it be Capps, Carl Henson and Stanley Swayngim. All are in there slugging away, and pleasing Coach Ma.vfleld. "I am pleasantly surprised at the progress we have made in the past week, and although we have a rug ged schedule, I feci the boys are working that much harder, in the face of keen and hard opposition [ ? ? Hazelwood Wins Pair Oil Ecusta Sazelwood climbed out of the C Industrial League cellar I here Saturday afternoon by scor ing a double victory over Ecusta on the W'THS diamond?winning the first, 12-5, and the second 14 13. Brown Griffim Abdot M men are expected to be ont this week for the Intense training period before the open ing schedule came. For the past font days the candidates have been going inruiqni HQOTnn?>'Vp fxrnjMCT, and studytnr the * fundamentals of footbelL this year", Coach Mayfleld said. ' Barring injuries, I feel we will have a good team. Right now I have one man. Carol Lowe, poten tial quarterback, with a sprained ankle. We are guarding against ouch things a? much as possible, and hops to come up to Sept. 3 and our opener with Canton in A-l con dition.' ?HaoaMHaaBMMRm BOB DAVENPORT is a key per former of the UCLA single wing style. The 22-year-old, 196-pound lad From Long Beach, Calif., now ratr ed the best fullback in UCLA his tory, was great as a sophomore, was voted on the second All-Am^ erica team by The Associated Press last year as a Junior, and now as a senior may even be better than ever. For the record, Davenport car ried the ball 218 times the last two seasons and gained a net 917 yards, averaging 4.02 per carry. Monnlameers Patting In Lois 01 Hard Workouts The Mountaineers got their heavy gear Friday, and went into some rough contact work for the first time this year. This afternoon Coach C. E, Weatherby plans to continue the heavier workouts and stress of fundamentals. He has not set any time for the team to begin scrim mages, this dependent upon their conditioning. Coach Weatherby said the team Was working hard, and that their spirit was still good. The 1959 team is going to be a J little heavier than last year, and there are 15 lettermen out for berths on the team. No assignments will be made un til almost game time, Sept. 9th. The team has 14 more practice days until their opener with Sylva. Scot. 9th. Thus far the schedule calls for only 9 games as November 4th game with Marshall was can celled by Marshall. Efforts to fill the date have not been successful, Coach Weatherby said. He scored 108 points on 18 touch downs. His teammates call him "Pogo," and the opponents can guess why. He seems propelled, like a pogo stick, going over the line of scrim mage.
