the Capitol, the Senate Office
Building, and the New and Old
House Office Buildings.
CAPITOL
The Capitol is built of light-gray
sandstone and matching marble.
The building is 751 feet 4 inches
long, 350 feet wide, and measures
287 feet 5Vi inches in height from
the base line on the east front to
the top of the Statue of Freedom.
One of the interesting features of
the Capitol is the unbroken corri
dor on the first floor which ex
tends 750 feet. There are other
corridors longer in Washington ?
the Department of Agriculture has
one that is 888 fet. Commerce, 991
feet, and the Pentagon, 906 feet
The Capitol covers 3V2 acres of
ground, contains a floor area of 14
acres, and has 435 rooms. The
Capitol and the three buildings
previously mentioned which com
prise "The Hill" are located in a
park of 131 acres. *
SENATE-HOUSE OFFICES |
The Senate Office Building is
Northeast of the Capitol. It is con
nected by an underground tunnel
The subway cars make the trip
operating at top speed, in about 45
seconds, covering the distance of
700 feet. When the bells ring for
a roll call vote, Senators can get
to the floor In time to vote, but
the scramble at times reminds me
of the dash to catch a bus that is
ready to depart. Representatives
hrve their offices in two buildings,
the Old and New Office Building,
located Southeast of the Capitol
When called upon to be in the
House for a vote, they have an un
derground tunnel, but are not
provided with a subway car.
Capitol Hill slows down consid
erably after the end of a Session
of the Congress, but the work of
representing the Nation goes on as
the legislative duties slacken for
a few weeks. In January, this place
wil again be an anthill of activity
with the convening of Congress.
PRESS CARD
Speaking of Capitol Hill, it now
has a newspaper, ROLL CALL.
Published fortnightly, it is a jour
nal of local news, much like our
non-daily North Carolina news
papers. I was flattered to find in
the mail recently a press card, giv
ing me credentials to report for
the publication. I think every other
member of Congress got one, too.
Anyway, it probably is the only
newspaper with all Congressmen
acredited reporters.

Sew Homemade Garments
In Direction Of The Grain
If you're planning to enter
some of your handiwork in the
State Fair this year, then you'll be
interested in these tips offered by
Julia Mclver, State College exten
sion clothing specialist.
There is a wide variety of tricks
that can give your clothes that
special mark of distinction, says
Miss Mclver. But actually there's
r.o special magic about making a
very finished looking dress. All
you need are a few helpful point
ers.
One of the most important steps
'o learn in dressmaking, says Miss
Mclver, is to learn to sew with
the grain of the material. Grain
is the way in which a fabric has
been woven ? length-wise (warp)
and crosswise (All) threads or
yarns are woven together at right
angles to make the material.
Fieces must be cut on the correct
grain, and the grain must be kept
in its correct position throughout
construction if the garment is to
be grain perfect, explains Miss Mc
lver.
Maybe you're wondering why it's
so important to have a grain-per
fect garment. Because the finished
garment will not fit well, hang
correctly, or look smart unless cut
and sewn on the proper grain, ex
plains Miss Mclver. Unfortunately,
there is no secret formula you can
employ to compensate or conceal
a badly cut garment. Prevention
is the only cure, so make your
clothes grain perfect.
