ture written by Martin Howard,
farm editor, for the Winston-Salem
Journal.
According to Howard, "Mr. Bob,
now 66 and bald of head and seam
ed of face and as full of vinegar
and honey as few men ever en
joy," spoke to the Country Squires
and their guests at a luncheon.
"Unlike Kerr Scott, who was
born at the Head of the Branch,"
Mr. Bob is quoted as saying, "I
was born at the foot of Raccoon
Creek.. Us folks of Ratcliffe Cove
usually have a reason for what we
do ? and what we do usually Is
sparked off by something mighty
impressive, and things just sort
of gather speed and scope from
there on." A good example, he
said, was how Raccoon Creek got
its name ? and with that he pro
ceeded to tell one of his best
tales.
Howard's story includes a brief
account of "Mr. Bob's" activities
and his contribution to the de
velopment and progress of Hay
wood County.
S. R. Mitchiner, now Forsyth
farm agent, worked with Mr. Bob
in the mid-thirties and Wayne
Corpening. now head of the agri
culture division of Wachovia Bank
and Trust Company in Winston
Salem, later worked with him as
farm agent. These men, no doubt,

In NATO Maneuvers
Army Cpl. Lewis A. Norris, 23,
whose wife, Isabelle, lives in
Waynesville, N. C., recently par
ticipated in Exercise Cordon Bleu,
a NATO maneuver using U. S.,
French and British troops, in West
Germany.
The exercise was a joint train
ing operation staged to teach the
three-power forces to work togeth
er under simulated battle condi
tions. It was a counter offensive
Forsyth audience.
Before the luncheon Mr. Bob
was conducted on a tour of Old
Salem and new Wake Forest Col
lege. Both impressed him, he said,
and, as for the new Wake Forest
a-building, he couldn't understand
why more young folks can't see
the wonderful opportunities before
them in this modern age.
