UNC Entrance Exams Explained By JIM NICHOLS CHAPEL HILL?Tar Heel piu--' enU who fear their aona and daughters may not pass the .iew| entrance examinations at the Uni versity of North Carolina can be 1 assured that the state Is not erect- ? ing "Keep Out'' signs. i To the contrsry, "Come On" | signs sre being put up,\or the tests \ sre expected to disclose students , who "ought to be going to college" snd do not go. Scholarship assist ance will be sought /or them. I: That assurance was made known 1 I - ? ! 1, today by University officials who' explained tome at tile conditions of the Board of Trustees' now admis sions policy, to become effective in the Fall at 1957. At the same time, the University indicated receiving s large number of letters applaud ing the decision. Announcement has been made of s "dry run" entrance exam ? ex perimental tests to be administered April 7 and April 14, at 23 testing centers throughout the state. Scotching rumors that the tests for entrance to the University will >e excessively high. Dr. W. W. Pierson, dean of the Graduate School and chairman of the All University Committee which help-' ed prepare the admissions require ments, said (1) enrollments are not going to be pegged at the present level, (2) studies covering the past tour years sbow that only $ or 9 per cent of an entering freshman class would have been rejected dur ing those years had the new admis sions plan been In effect. (3) these studies also show that less than four per cent of those students who would have been rejected were able to pass their work and graduate. Although the plan as adopted ap plies only to the Consolidated Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Greensboro and Raleigh, there are indications the system of ex aminations may be extended to ail 12 of th? state-supported institu tions of higher learning in the state. Advice of the State Dept. of Public Instruction also is to be available in administering tbe tests. Some other aspects of the exam ining system are: 1. The tests will not necessarily keep out students who are poorly prepared, merely because the high schools they have attended are not as good as certain other high schools or preparatory schools. The examinations will be comprehen sive enough to test aptitude, poten tial ability, .as well as the level of scholarship already attained. If the student is teachable, and if he has prospects of maintaining the Uni versity pace, admission will not be denied. The fcbedule for administering the teata on April 7 and.
